Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Nears $399M Milestone
Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is nearly reaching a significant milestone at the box office and outdoing a prior sequel. This action-packed film series, inspired by the 1966 espionage television show of the same name, debuted in 1996 with Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible, where Tom Cruise first appeared as Ethan Hunt, the series’ super spy. Ever since, Cruise has taken on this role in every subsequent film, and The Final Reckoning represents his eighth appearance in the franchise. Alongside Cruise, the movie features Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, and Angela Bassett. It serves as a direct sequel to Dead Reckoning, released in 2023.
In its initial release, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” opened at the second spot on the domestic box office, trailing behind “Lilo & Stitch,” but managed an impressive 3-day opening weekend gross of $64 million, setting a new record for the franchise’s best debut. Furthermore, in its worldwide premiere, it earned almost $200 million within just three days, positioning itself as the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year during those initial days. However, since then, the film has been consistently climbing various box office charts, except for one significant exception.
The Final Reckoning Is Just $36 Million Away From Passing Mission: Impossible III
Mission: Impossible III Made Just $399M At The Global Box Office
As I’m writing this, according to “The Numbers” and “The Final Reckoning,” the film has made $363 million globally. Currently, it is the lowest-earning movie in the series, but it’s just $36 million shy of overtaking “Mission: Impossible III,” which grossed $399 million worldwide with an estimated production budget of around $186 million. Since “The Final Reckoning” is now in its third weekend at the box office, it appears that it won’t be long before it surpasses the 2006 installment. Here’s a look at the box office earnings for the previous seven “Mission: Impossible” films:
At present, The Final Reckoning has made $363 million worldwide and is close to beating Mission: Impossible III, which made $399 million. Since it’s already in its third week at the box office, it looks like it won’t take much longer for it to surpass the 2006 installment. Here are the previous seven Mission: Impossible movies’ box office earnings:
Title | Worldwide Box Office |
---|---|
Mission: Impossible (1996) | $457,697,994 |
Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) | $549,588,516 |
Mission: Impossible III (2006) | $399,387,745 |
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) | $694,713,230 |
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) | $688,858,992 |
Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) | $786,626,183 |
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) | $565,755,394 |
After “Mission: Impossible III,” we find the first three movies in the series, which, even without considering inflation, have been the lowest-earning films in the franchise collectively. However, “Dead Reckoning Part One” held the title for the poorest-performing film since 2006 during its lackluster box office performance, managing only $565.7 million globally. This leaves high expectations on “The Final Reckoning” to enhance its own position within the series as a whole by doing better at the box office.
Mission: Impossible 8 Is Likely To Hit $400M
$400M Is Also The Reported Budget For The Final Reckoning
By outshining the third installment in 2025, this movie will be just under a million dollars away from reaching the impressive milestone of $400 million. Remarkably, only four other films have achieved this feat so far in the year 2025. Reaching this figure would recoup the massive production costs of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” a film with an astounding budget of $400 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever produced.
Even though Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been released, there’s still a significant distance to cover before it becomes profitable. This is because cinemas keep half of the ticket revenue and marketing costs aren’t included in the production budget. As a rule of thumb, a film usually needs to generate at least twice its production cost at the box office to turn a profit. Given this guideline, the approximate break-even point for the new movie might be around $1 billion, which is a figure none of the previous installments have managed to reach yet.
Can The Final Reckoning Surpass More Mission: Impossible Movies?
It May Not Rise As High As Expected
It’s questionable whether the movie “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” will recoup its costs in theaters, and it’s growing uncertain where it will land in the series rankings, as its earnings have significantly lagged behind the peak performance of the highest-grossing installment, “Fallout,” despite having the best opening weekend for the franchise. Although it’s expected to surpass later films, particularly the first two, it appears more probable that it will settle in the middle tier rather than breaking additional records.
