James Blunt shares heart-wrenching reason he made Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher his son’s godmother
James Blunt requested Carrie Fisher to serve as his son’s godmother, hoping that the responsibility would inspire her to prioritize self-care more diligently.
In the early 2000s, during the time he was recording his debut album “Back To Bedlam,” the singer of “You’re Beautiful” (aged 51) shared a living space with the late Star Wars actor. Over the subsequent years, they maintained a close relationship.
When his and Sofia Wellesley’s first son was born, he requested that Carrie assume a unique position in the boy’s life.
James disclosed that his deceased friend, who passed away at the age of 60 in December 2016 following a cardiac arrest and subsequent detection of drugs in her system during an autopsy, had been asked to serve as godmother.
He shared with People magazine: “I confided in her about everything. I informed her on the day I met my wife, we selected our engagement rings together. She’s the godmother of my child. I spent the day before she passed away with her, and it was incredibly sad.

He commented, ‘Perhaps the most disheartening aspect was when I requested her to serve as my child’s godmother, hoping that it would encourage her to take care of herself more. Regrettably, she didn’t seem to do so.’
James met Carrie when he was dating one of her family friends and during a group lunch in London.
He shared with the actress from Sibling Rivalry that he was a musician intending to move to Los Angeles. When he confessed his uncertainty about where he would reside, she graciously offered for him to stay at her place.
He mused: ‘It was quite extraordinary. For the initial three months, I didn’t exchange a single word with her. Not a single word. Deborah Reynolds, her mother, resided on the property. I’d cross paths with them from time to time, but in the mornings, I’d depart for the studio. I’d return very late at night, and during that period, I simply didn’t engage in conversation with her.’
In the wee hours of the third month, I stumbled upon a conversation in the kitchen, where Carrie’s team was gathered. They were discussing the remarkable actress who had been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder at the tender age of 24. As a lifestyle expert, understanding and empathizing with mental health issues is crucial, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of respect for her courage in sharing her journey publicly.
He remembered thinking: “They commented that she was experiencing a fit of some sort, and seemed to be losing her mind. It appeared she required a change in her medications, and perhaps professional assistance was needed.
While discussing her, she was actually present in the room.
James and Carrie began chatting and quickly became friends.
It appeared that she was swiftly moving from one topic to another without pausing for breath, but it seemed like her mind was actively processing all the information. All of a sudden, there was this profound moment when I found myself sitting at the end of her bed, and she started talking to me until five in the morning.
The following day, he entered the studio after it. He perched on the edge of the bed and conversed with her until five in the morning. For the remainder of her life, we continued this pattern, speaking deep into the night. By the end, she had truly become my dearest friend. Reflecting back now, he said.

While Carrie was godmother to his firstborn son, he made Ed Sheeran godfather to his second child.
Blake is days away from kicking off his 20th anniversary Back to Bedlam tour.
From around mid-June to early July, he’ll be touring across the United States, wrapping up with three performances in Mexico.
On Thursday, the celebrity hinted at appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show by telling his 1.2 million Instagram fans, “Good morning America! I’m having a quick chat with the fantastic @kellyclarkson before our tour begins!
