Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Finale Sparks Rage Over Rushed Storyline

WARNING! SPOILERS ahead for Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5, episode 9, “Off The Books.”

As a dedicated movie reviewer, I must say that the ninth episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime’s fifth season, titled “Off The Books,” was a long-awaited revelation about Joe Jr.’s (Michael Trotter) whereabouts. After a suspenseful season opener with Joe being handcuffed to a case full of chemical weapons, the subsequent episodes left many fans wondering about his fate. However, this week’s episode seemed to rush through Joe Jr.’s storyline, leading to a devastating conclusion that left me heartbroken.

It was widely anticipated that Joe Jr.’s tale would be pivotal to this season, considering the cliffhanger ending of the previous one. Yet, for most of the current season, his disappearance has been only subtly hinted at, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. This episode, unfortunately, seemed to wrap up Joe Jr.’s storyline too swiftly, leaving many questions unanswered and a sense of loss lingering in the air.

The narrative of “Fail Safe” resumed post haste, with Stabler receiving news from Joe Jr. at the hospital. In this installment, we saw the much-anticipated reappearance of the antagonist Julian Emery from “Law & Order: Organized Crime”, season 4. His objective was to manipulate Joe for his own purposes, distracting Stabler while eradicating rivals in his illicit drug business. This predicament led to a thrilling game of hide-and-seek, as Stabler frantically searched for and aimed to apprehend Emery, all while ensuring Joe’s safety during the nail-biting penultimate episode of the season.

Emery’s Return Makes It Clear What Season 5 Has Been Missing

Other Villains In The Season Didn’t Have The Same Impact

Julian Emery’s (Tom Payne) comeback propels “Off the Books” beyond typical police procedural material, offering a villain who is both captivating and merciless, a perfect fit for the core of “Law & Order: Organized Crime”. His unique blend of wealth, power, and charm makes Emery a more ruthless adversary than many of the antagonists that Stabler has pursued throughout season 5. A notable scene featuring Emery was his video call with his son, Giles. In this conversation, Emery seemed guarded about future meetings and later expressed regret that it might have been their last talk, hinting at a complex relationship between father and son.

In this particular scene, it didn’t significantly advance the storyline, yet it provided a glimpse into Emery’s character, making him seem more human. The most intriguing and terrifying villains are those we can relate to, serving as a reminder that they’re not too dissimilar from us; they’ve simply chosen a different path in life. It’s crucial for Law & Order: Organized Crime to target and apprehend individuals like Emery who wield significant power and cause trouble. Rocko Spezanno came very close to embodying this type of villain, but unfortunately, his development was insufficient to keep viewers engaged; the season would have been more impactful if Emery had been the primary antagonist throughout all 10 episodes.

Stabler & Emery’s Conflict Came To A Predictable But Heartbreaking End

Joe Jr.’s Death Wasn’t Surprising But Was Devastating Anyway

In the course of the season, Joe Jr’s prolonged absence, ominous phone call to Stabler, and ongoing alliance with Emery hinted at a potentially tragic outcome for Joe Jr. However, in episode 8 of Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5, it was implied that another character might meet an untimely end instead. Nonetheless, the storyline involving Stabler and Emery’s cat-and-mouse game ultimately culminated in a heartbreaking conclusion for Joe Jr., as they each tried to outmaneuver each other. In this twisted plot, Emery manipulated Joe Jr. into providing false information to the police, which would lead to the arrest of rival drug dealers who stood in his way.

In another words, this cunning plan had merit, yet Emery failed to account for Stabler’s detective prowess in deciphering Joe Jr.’s actions. Emery ought to have recognized that employing such a stratagem once was sufficient; instead, he repeated it, culminating in the execution of Joe Jr. on charges of betrayal. Unfortunately, Stabler’s retaliation strategy also had a glaring weakness. He gifted Joe Jr. a necklace purportedly from Bernie (Ellen Burstyn), but one that concealed a tracker. This seemed like a blatant attempt to install a listening device, and it was predictable that Emery would pick up on this almost instantly.

Joe, Jr.’s Death Sets Up The Season Finale

However, Its Late Inclusion Felt Rushed

It’s highly probable that Joe Jr.’s demise will reignite Stabler’s fury and sorrow. His behavior mirrors that from the first season of Law & Order: Organized Crime, where Stabler was relentless in seeking justice for Kathy’s (Isabel Gilles) death, disregarding Bell’s (Daneille Moné Truitt) approval for his investigation. Given that Stabler recently conversed with Tim McKenna, who has already shown a penchant for bending or breaking the rules, the season finale could very well be an intense pursuit of Emery, a mission that might cost Stabler his job and potentially his liberty.

Instead of building tension and emotion across the entire season, Law & Order: Organized Crime hastily introduced a significant moment involving Joe Jr.’s story by delaying it until nearly the end of the series. In a single episode, Joe Jr. reached out to Stabler for farewell, manipulated both parties, and met his tragic end. If this storyline had been developed gradually throughout the season instead of being hurriedly resolved in such a short span, Joe’s death might have carried more emotional weight.
