ITV star speaks out on “daunting” return to beloved British detective drama
Actor Daniel Casey, previously known for his work on Midsomer Murders, has prepared himself to portray DCI Tom Barnaby in a fresh interpretation.
Casey, famed for his portrayal of Sergeant Gavin Troy alongside Barnaby, is facing a significant challenge as he prepares to assume the role of the renowned detective in a stage production. In other words, he has some big shoes to step into.
Starting in October, I can’t wait to immerse myself in the captivating world of “Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift,” a television adaptation inspired by Caroline Graham’s initial novel from her beloved series. This tale was previously brought to life as the debut episode of season one on ITV, and I couldn’t be more excited to revisit it in this new format!

Talking about playing the character of Tom Barnaby, played by John Nettles from 1997 to 2011, Casey expressed that it’s quite a challenging experience.
He shared with RadioTimes.com that it feels appropriate, there’s a hint of apprehension, and he admitted to feeling somewhat nervous. However, considering his age aligns with John’s age in the initial episode, it all seems fitting.
He went on saying, “I’m genuinely thrilled to take over his role, but it’s important to note that the shoes I’m stepping into are rather large ones to follow.
Casey recalled his initial encounter with Nettles during the series rehearsal, stating that he and the actor from Barnaby seemed to have an instant spark or natural compatibility.
Casey confirmed what he had mentioned in the press, stating that he indeed learned from a great master. And let me tell you, he was truly extraordinary.
The performer plans to offer a unique interpretation of Barnaby on stage, while ensuring that his character as the detective retains the intriguing, enigmatic charm that audiences have grown fond of.
Casey noted that since he had been just a foot away from the person who performed it for seven years, it’s unavoidable that there would be some resemblance, yet because it will be spoken by him, it will take on a distinct form.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been immersed in the world of Troy for an impressive seven seasons up until 2003. That year, something amazing happened – my character got promoted! The reins were then handed over to my cousin, DCI John Barnaby, skillfully portrayed by Neil Dudgeon.
From October 2025 to April 2026, the stage adaptation of “Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift” will be traveling around the UK. You can purchase tickets for this show via ATG.
Midsomer Murders seasons 1-23 are available on ITVX.
