Marvel Responds to Fan Complaints Over Thunderbolts Asterisk Controversy

Despite numerous fans hailing the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film as a top-notch Marvel production of recent years, there are lingering complaints about the movie, notably its unusual marketing strategy post-release. Following Marvel revealing the real significance behind the asterisk in the film’s title, a Marvel representative addresses fan worries about this unexpected decision.

Disney’s senior vice president of marketing, Ryan Stankevich, explained, following the release of Thunderbolts, that Marvel intentionally unveiled a significant plot twist earlier than planned. While some viewers expressed disappointment over the early revelation, spoiling the film’s big surprise during its initial run, Stankevich maintained that many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans appreciated the move and anticipated the ensuing conversation.

As a movie enthusiast and Marvel fan, I can confidently say that the discourse surrounding these blockbusters is an integral aspect of the experience. While there were certainly voices expressing dissatisfaction, many more praised the cleverness of the storytelling. Interestingly enough, some viewers even criticized us for not adapting “The New Avengers” with a ‘z’! However, we thrive on engaging in constructive conversations and are always eager to hear your thoughts.

A few days following the release of “Thunderbolts,” Marvel started promoting the film as “ Thunderbolts *,” with this change noticeable on various promotional materials such as posters. While some Marvel enthusiasts who hadn’t watched the movie were upset by the move, it aligned well with the studio’s unconventional marketing approach for the film from its inception, generating buzz since they announced the asterisk during CinemaCon last spring.

The New Avengers Take on Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday

In spite of some criticism regarding the asterisk symbol and other minor issues, many viewers found “Thunderbolts” an enjoyable movie to watch. With a 88% critical rating and a 93% Popcornmeter score, this film has proven to be a box office success, earning over $371.1 million globally while only costing $180 million to produce.

In the climactic finale of Phase Five, the New Avengers team consists of Yelena Belova/White Widow (played by Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). Led unofficially by Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), they take on a crucial assignment following their capture in a lethal trap. If they manage to complete this mission, it will serve as atonement for their past wrongdoings. Additionally, the movie introduces The Sentry/The Void, played by Lewis Pullman.

In the upcoming film titled “Doomsday“, it’s revealed that The New Avengers will join forces with other heroes like Sam Wilson/Captain America, the X-Men, Wakandans, and The Fantastic Four to challenge Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom. Interestingly, though, it appears that before they tackle Doctor Doom, they will first deal with a preliminary matter involving Victor von Doom. Production for “Doomsday” is underway in the U.K. at present.

Thunderbolts* is now showing in theaters across North America.
