Ridley Scott Thought the Alien Franchise Was Dead After Alien 4
Original director Ridley Scott says he thought the franchise was done after its fourth film.
More recently, Scott expressed his past apprehension towards the future of the Alien series following the underwhelming reception of the fourth film, 1997’s Alien: Resurrection. “I felt it was losing its spark after number four,” Scott stated. “I believe my contribution was quite good, and I think [James Cameron’s] was good too. However, I must admit that the subsequent ones were not up to the mark. I thought, ‘That’s it for a franchise as significant as Star Trek or Star Wars.’
Additionally, Scott reminisced about initially being given the opportunity for Alien, along with his initial response to the project. “Being a designer is part of my blood and genetics,” Scott explained. “I instinctively knew how to handle it. I was the fifth option, but I can’t fathom why you proposed Alien to Robert Altman. Altman retorted, ‘Are you serious? I’m not going to do this,’ and I countered, ‘Are you serious? I must do this,’ because it delves into the realm of heavy metal. Thus, that’s where I found myself, and then it faded away.
What Is Alien: Resurrection About?
1997 saw the arrival of the fourth installment in the Alien series, titled “Alien: Resurrection.” This film unfolds 200 years after the incidents depicted in “Alien 3,” and introduces Ripley 8, a clone of Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley. The US Military had been using Ripley 8 as a host for a Xenomorph Queen, hoping to create weaponized versions of these terrifying interstellar creatures from the “Alien” franchise. However, when these hybrid Xenomorphs and their kind escape and pose a direct threat, Ripley 8 finds herself teaming up with a motley crew of mercenaries to fight for survival against this new menace.
Resurrection proved to be a financial triumph, earning over $161 million worldwide on a budget of $70 million during its initial cinema release. Additionally, it received several notable award nominations in the industry, including six Saturn Award nominations and a win for Winona Ryder at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards for Favorite Supporting Actress.
