Disney Rushes Snow White to Streaming in Just One Week Sparks Controversy and Questions

The live-action version of Snow White by Disney will make its debut on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. This movie will hit the streaming platform approximately 83 days after its initial theater release on March 21, 2025. This streaming window is a bit faster than usual for Disney productions, but typically, there’s a waiting period of at least 90 days between a film’s theatrical debut and its arrival on streaming platforms. Sometimes, this gap can be much larger.

Under the direction of Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, this upcoming movie features Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot portraying the Evil Queen. Andrew Burnap joins the cast as Jonathan, a fresh character who is Snow White’s love interest. The star-studded cast also includes voice performances from several talented actors: Andrew Barth Feldman (Dopey), Tituss Burgess (Bashful), Martin Klebba (Grumpy), Jason Kravits (Sneezy), George Salazar (Happy), Jeremy Swift (Doc), and Andy Grotelueschen (Sleepy). Interestingly, the actors playing the dwarves had limited speaking roles in the build-up to the film’s release, which may have contributed to its less-than-stellar box office performance.

The movie’s music mixes familiar songs such as “Heigh-Ho” and “Whistle While You Work”, along with fresh tunes from the talented pair, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are known for their work on films like “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman”. New additions to the soundtrack include “Waiting on a Wish”, sung by Zegler, “All Is Fair” by Gadot, and “A Hand Meets a Hand”, a duet between Zegler and Burnap. Unfortunately, these songs from the soundtrack haven’t been successful in sales or streaming platforms. Unlike some films that didn’t do well at the box office but gained popularity through their catchy musical numbers, “Snow White” doesn’t seem to be following the same trajectory as a successor to “Encanto”.

In spite of or possibly due to its famous cast members and strong musical background, Snow White encountered difficulties at the box office, earning just $205.5 million worldwide compared to a production budget surpassing $300 million. When accounting for unspecified marketing expenses, there are suggestions that the movie required close to a billion dollars to achieve profitability. The film received unfavorable reviews, boasting a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics applauded Zegler’s vocals in the soundtrack but were largely indifferent-at-best towards the movie’s storytelling decisions and visual effects.

The movie faced a lot of debate as a result of its creative choices, like reimagining the original 1937 Disney animated classic and representing the seven dwarfs as magical beings. Additionally, Rachel Zegler’s comments about altering the characters and her request for the film’s producer to change their online behavior caused some controversy. Furthermore, Zegler’s political opinions on Middle Eastern conflicts added to the series of controversies surrounding her ahead of the movie’s premiere.

For folks curious about the original version, Disney+ provides the 1937 animated movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” as well. This enables viewers to contrast the classic production with its modern-day equivalent.

Given that Zegler’s version of Snow White debuted on Disney+ quietly and ahead of regular release schedules, it could be argued that this rapid rollout may mark the final awkward moment for the movie. Here’s hoping it is indeed the last such instance.
