Ruth Jones’ new BBC special confirms release date – and there’s not long to wait

The release date for Ruth Jones’s upcoming BBC special has been officially set, meaning fans won’t have to wait much longer.

In April, it was revealed that the star from Gavin & Stacey was going to collaborate with his good friend Steve Speirs for a special hour-long show titled Ruth and Steve: From Merthyr with Love. This program features them embarking on a journey together and highlighting the fascinating past of the Welsh town, Merthyr Tydfil.

I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly await the long-anticipated premiere of “From Merthyr with Love”! This heartwarming production will make its debut on BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer this coming Friday, 13th June at 9pm. Not only that, but fans like myself can enjoy a repeat viewing of this special program on the streaming service. Can’t wait to tune in!

Jones, who collaborated on the script and acted in “Gavin & Stacey“, revealed that she had an “absolutely fantastic” time making the special. She further mentioned (through BBC): “We filmed over four days to create a weekend – I relished meeting everyone, basking in their positivity. It was incredibly uplifting.

For years, Steve has been more than just an acquaintance to me, being from Merthyr and Troedyrhiw. However, I had never visited his hometown with him before. Given his deep affection for the place, the prospect of spending a few days together there, discovering its charm, seemed irresistible.

“I find myself drawn to Steve’s company due to his humor and charm, making it easy for me to agree. To be honest, my understanding of Merthyr prior was limited to knowing that my sister practiced as a GP there and appreciated the tight-knit community and friendly locals.

I’ve become an honorary resident of Merthyr, and I must say, the people I encountered, their optimism, and the stunning landscapes have left me in awe. I never realized how beautiful it was here… The warmth of the welcome I received has been truly heartening. I couldn’t ask for a better experience – it felt more like pleasure than work.

Speirs expressed that he wanted the journey to be deeply personal, reflecting the Merthyr of his upbringing, yet also highlighting its current state. Having just been seen in Death Valley, he shared, “I may be biased… but I couldn’t help thinking, ‘Wow! We reside in such a stunning location.’

Ruth and Steve: From Merthyr with Love will premiere on 13 June on BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer.
