A Grey’s Anatomy Star Wants Denzel Washington On The Show… And There Is Precedent
Over the past 21 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy has welcomed several well-known guest stars, and this trend is expected to continue when Season 22 airs in the fall of 2025. Many fans probably have their own list of celebrities they hope will make an appearance. Remarkably, one cast member has Oscar winner Denzel Washington at the top of his dream list. While it may seem unlikely, there is a history of such connections within the show.
In 2016, the star of “Gladiator II” actually took on the role of director in an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”, one of only five projects he’s ever been given credit for directing. This was also a rare instance where he worked on television as a director. Almost 10 years later, actor Jason George has expressed his hopes that Washington may return to “Grey’s Anatomy” in a more prominent role, as he shared with The Post.
I’d be thrilled if he appeared on the show, live on camera. Regrettably, it may not come true, but I have to express my hope. It’s Denzel we’re talking about! He should play a charismatic doctor, someone who truly impresses, and everyone will be buzzing with anticipation for his arrival. He’d be the perfect authority figure.
Given his status as an Academy Award-winning legend who last appeared on TV as Dr. Philip Chandler in the ’80s medical drama St. Elsewhere, it’s unlikely that he will reappear on Grey’s Anatomy. Nevertheless, it would certainly be entertaining to have him play a doctor once more, considering it has been so long since the final episode of St. Elsewhere. Moreover, his understanding of what goes on behind the scenes at Grey’s Anatomy, even though that was a decade ago, adds an interesting dimension to this speculation.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that if this actor were to join ‘Grey’s’, it would undoubtedly bring an extra dose of fun and efficiency behind the scenes. You see, I remember when Denzel Washington once took the director’s chair, he was known for ensuring his female co-stars arrived promptly on set and were ready with their makeup long before the sun had fully risen. He would remark that the usual professionalism on set reached new heights during his directing week, a testament to the impact he has on those around him.
Denzel Washington is quite occupied with his work schedule. In 2025, he’s set to star in a new movie titled “Highest 2 Lowest,” and there are at least two other films in the pipeline for him. With his current commitments and minimal television roles recently, it’s unlikely that we might see him on “Grey’s Anatomy.” However, it doesn’t hurt to keep hoping, even though the possibility is rather slim.
As a die-hard fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I can’t help but feel a pang of anticipation as we approach Season 22. Although Denzel Washington won’t likely make a guest appearance as a doctor any time soon, the show still promises to deliver an exhilarating ride. The previous season ended in a nail-biting cliffhanger with another part of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital getting destroyed and some of our favorite doctors in peril. If there’s one thing Grey’s Anatomy is famous for, it’s leaving fans on the edge of their seats during off-seasons, and I can hardly wait to see what fresh twists and turns await us next.
