Meta sued by Eminem’s publishing company over alleged copyright infringement
As a passionate film enthusiast, I find myself sharing the news about Eight Mile Style, the company that holds the rights to some of Eminem’s chart-topping tunes, taking legal action against Meta, the colossal social media platform. The claim? They’re allegedly infringing on copyrights.
A legal action brought before a federal court in Michigan alleges that the Silicon Valley tech giant, headquartered in Menlo Park, unlawfully stored, replicated, and disseminated Eminem’s songs without first securing the necessary permissions.
Technology and the Internet
A company that distributes musical content is taking legal action against Facebook and their advertising partner, alleging they played an Eminem track in a commercial for Facebook Home without obtaining the necessary authorization to do so.
8 Mile Style, a company located in Ferndale, Michigan, is pursuing a claim of at least $109 million against Meta, along with an injunction to halt various alleged instances of copyright violation.
A significant element within the realm of social media is the incorporation of music. Users on platforms like Facebook and Instagram often include tunes when posting images or videos that are visible to the public or just their close connections.
However, as social media alters how individuals uncover and tune into fresh tunes, it has ignited worries among musicians regarding fair compensation for their work.
For years, Meta has been illegally using the works of Eight Mile Compositions, taking advantage of musicians’ creativity to boost their financial gains, all while ignoring the rights of the creators themselves. This action is yet another example of a multi-billion dollar corporation profiting off the intellectual property of others without permission.” (Lawsuit statement)
As a passionate cinephile, I’d put it this way: I, being part of the movie-loving community, am thrilled to share that Meta, our go-to platform, boasts partnerships with countless creators worldwide. Moreover, they have an expansive global licensing program for music, ensuring a rich and diverse soundtrack for our viewing pleasure!
In a statement via email, the company mentioned that they were actively discussing matters with Eight Mile Style in a fair manner. However, instead of continuing these talks, Eight Mile Style opted to file a lawsuit.
In simpler terms, it’s stated that Eight Mile Style owns and manages approximately 243 songs produced by Eminem, a renowned rapper and producer known for hits like “Lose Yourself.” Although Meta has taken down some of these songs including “Lose Yourself” from their music libraries, other adaptations such as a piano instrumental cover and a karaoke version continue to be available on the platform, as mentioned in the lawsuit.
Meta not only provided a platform for users to potentially violate copyright by uploading songs, but also actively saved and replicated these songs in its music databases, enabling users to incorporate them into their videos and images, as suggested by the lawsuit. Reportedly, users have incorporated Eminem’s music into millions of videos that have collectively been viewed billions of times, according to the legal claim.
Meta attempted, but failed, to secure a licensing agreement for Eminem’s tunes during discussions with digital music royalties company Audiam. However, it should be noted that Meta lacked the power to grant such a license.
According to the lawsuit, Meta executives have been promoting widespread violations of rules, with the aim of drawing in a large number of users. This strategy allegedly benefits them by increasing the profitability of advertising on their platforms.
Over 3 billion individuals worldwide engage with at least one of Meta’s applications on a daily basis, and this tech giant consistently earns multiple billions of dollars per quarter through advertising revenues.
During the initial trimester of the current year, Meta’s earnings amounted to a staggering $42.31 billion, marking a 16% rise compared to the same period last year. Interestingly, Meta’s net profit surged by a substantial 35%, reaching an impressive $16.6 billion in the opening quarter.
Previously, Meta has encountered legal disputes concerning Eminem’s music, specifically with the track “Under the Influence.” Back in 2013, Eight Mile Style filed a lawsuit against Facebook, claiming that they used this song in an advertisement without obtaining proper authorization.
