As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but acknowledge that Aaron Paul’s portrayal of Jesse Pinkman in “Breaking Bad” was instrumental in making this series one of the greatest TV shows ever produced. Among my favorite scenes showcases why he was an ideal fit for the role.

Jesse Pinkman, a goofy yet kind-hearted slacker, finds himself on a perilous path when he crosses paths with Walter White, a discontented chemistry teacher whose transformation into a ruthless villain is the heart of “Breaking Bad.” Initially, Walt enlists Jesse, his former student, to help him establish a methamphetamine business, under the pretense of generating enough wealth to secure his family’s financial stability before his impending demise.

It’s well-known that the show “Breaking Bad” illustrates how Walter White’s criminal enterprise gradually slips from his grasp. Yet, throughout this journey, the bond between Walter and Jesse is both poisonous and oddly heartwarming. Jesse struggles for a long time to acknowledge that he has misdirected his allegiance towards Walt and must distance himself. However, before reaching this point, Jesse’s genuine kindness towards Walt creates some of the most memorable moments in “Breaking Bad.” Aaron Paul particularly cherishes one scene where Jesse finds himself in a delicate balance.

Jesse And Skyler Meet Again For A Conversation They Do No Want To Be Having

In 2018, members of the Breaking Bad cast were asked by Entertainment Weekly to pick their favorite scenes from the series. Actor Bryan Cranston (Paul) selected the episode “Buyout” from season 5, where Jesse is invited to dinner with Walt and his wife Skyler (Anna Gunn). The scene takes place in episode 6 of season 5. In this dinner setting, Jesse attempts to persuade Walt to sell their methylamine, earning them $5 million each and an exit from the business. However, a power-hungry Walt rejects the offer when Skyler returns home for dinner, instead inviting Jesse to stay. About this scene, Cranston commented:

In a different wording: It seems to me that Jesse clinging to his water glass is quite noticeable… He appears to be using his water glass as a sort of shield while he observes this marriage disintegrate right before his eyes. When Skyler asks, “Did he also mention your affair?” in that scene, I can’t help but chuckle each time, finding the absurdity of the situation incredibly amusing.

In Jesse’s characteristically friendly manner, he finds himself in a predicament, observing Skyler’s predicament as well. He compliments the food, which Skyler had bought instead of cooked, in an attempt to remain amiable. At this point, Jesse wants to escape and is beginning to understand the true extent of Walt’s danger. The dark humor in this scene lies in Jesse acting as if everything is ordinary, even more so than Walt. However, Skyler, who is clearly miserable, brushes aside Jesse’s polite remarks with a sharp response.

To put it simply, the dinner scene is downright uncomfortable. While Walt’s family members are familiar faces from the show, they seem to keep their distance from Jesse. Despite only having met once before in an awkward encounter, Jesse appears to think of Skyler and him as friendly acquaintances. However, Skyler is well aware of who Jesse is and what he and Walt have been involved in together. This becomes particularly evident when Walt, by inviting Jesse for dinner, seems to treat the situation as if he were welcoming a respectable business associate.

Here, Jesse and Walt find themselves in a situation where they’re attempting to reconcile, but Skyler stands firm in her refusal this time around. Throughout the series, Jesse often provides comical moments with his quirky or friendly demeanor, which leaves Walt skeptical. The fact that Paul finds this scene amusing hints at how well-suited he was for the role. This is the moment when the contrast between Jesse’s character and Walt’s disbelief generates an uncomfortable tension.
