Snow White’s Disney+ Debut: Will It Find Redemption After Box Office Bomb?
Following a disappointing performance at the box office, Snow White will ultimately debut on Disney+. This live-action adaptation of Walt Disney’s inaugural animated production, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, premiered in March 2025, and almost immediately became one of the biggest flops of the year, earning a mere $204 million globally compared to an estimated budget ranging from $240 to $270 million. The film was the subject of extensive online discussion for nearly three years prior to its release, but may now find renewed popularity on streaming platforms.
Disney has announced that “Snow White” will start streaming on Disney+ on June 11, 2025, which marks a little over two months since it hit theaters. Previously, “Snow White” was available for paid video-on-demand viewing on May 13, 2025. Now, with its release on Disney+ coming thirteen days before Marvel Studios’ “Ironheart” premieres, “Snow White” has taken a prominent spot among Disney+’s major June releases.
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It’s Off to Disney+ We Go!
From the very beginning, the movie titled Snow White faced numerous criticisms and personal attacks, particularly towards its lead actress Rachel Zegler who was subjected to racist remarks and harassment following her earlier comments regarding the previous adaptation being misconstrued. Moreover, the controversy surrounding stars Gal Gadot and the subpar CGI Dwarfs added fuel to the fire, making it appear as though this film had disappointed everyone who saw it. Remarkably, it still managed to earn $82 million domestically, which seems almost miraculous considering the negative reception. Yet, this success was insufficient to restore its tarnished reputation.
The financial performance of “Snow White” at the box office caused Disney to postpone their live-action version of “Tangled.” But, after “Lilo & Stitch” was a massive success at the box office, this pause in future remakes might only be temporary. In fact, “Snow White” bombing at the box office in March but Disney recovering thanks to “Lilo & Stitch’s” success in May is much like 2012, when Disney had their biggest flop (“John Carter”) and their biggest hit (“The Avengers”) within just three months.
Although Snow White‘s theatrical success may not have been as impressive as some other Disney films at the box office, its story could still be far from over. For instance, Encanto performed moderately well in 2021, but it gained immense popularity on Disney+ soon after its release. This surge was partly due to TikTok, where “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” became the first Disney song to top the Billboard Top 100 since “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. Even a movie like Lilo & Stitch, which was only a moderate box office hit in 2002, has grown into one of Disney’s most lucrative franchises over the past two decades. It is possible that Snow White could find an audience of young children who appreciate it as a Disney film without being aware of the external circumstances, and it might still gain popularity.
