Mike Flanagan Reveals Why Summer Howell Is the Ultimate Carrie in the New Prime Video Reboot
In 1974, the chilling classic film Carrie is set for a fresh revamp, this time as a TV show. The man behind the reimagining is Mike Flanagan, director known for his adaptations of Stephen King’s novels Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game. Details about the upcoming series remain scarce, but Flanagan has hinted at reasons to be thrilled about the modern interpretation of this horror classic.
Without a doubt, a crucial aspect of the series lies in its casting, particularly the choice of Carrie White. Summer Howell, famed for her performances in TV’s Channel Zero and films such as Cult of Chucky and Hunter Hunter, has been selected to embody the shy yet powerful teenager. Although Flanagan admits she wasn’t an easy actress to discover, he also hints that her casting is a reason for fans to eagerly anticipate the show.
At present, Flanagan is actively marketing his most recent production, a Stephen King adaptation named “The Life of Chuck“. This movie is scheduled for release in the near future, yet initial feedback indicates it’s another success for Flanagan, who seems to be King’s preferred director when adapting his stories. During the premiere event for “The Life of Chuck“, Flanagan spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and discussed some insights regarding the upcoming “Carrie” series.
After examining approximately 1,800 potential candidates for that role, we went through an extensive search. In the end, I believe we selected the perfect actor for the part. Finding her was a time-consuming task, but I am eager for people to witness her performance because it’s unlike anything ever done with this role previously.
Regarding her relatively brief acting career, Howell boasts a wealth of knowledge in the horror genre, having worked on numerous projects within it. Some of her notable roles include Harland Manor, All Fun and Games, and Spirit in the Blood. It remains to be seen how she will make an impact in this series alongside other talented actresses like Chloë Grace Moretz, who portrayed the title character in the 2013 remake, and Sissy Spacek, whose unforgettable performance as Carrie is one of the most iconic in horror cinema.
‘Carrie’ Boasts Another All-Star Ensemble Cast for Mike Flanagan
Mike Flanagan consistently delivers high-quality films and TV series by skillfully assembling talented casts. Notably, the principal cast for his upcoming adaptation of ‘Carrie’ has been revealed, featuring Howell alongside Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Alison Thornton, and Arthur Conti. Samantha Sloyan, who portrayed Bev Keane in Flanagan’s ‘Midnight Mass,’ is perfectly suited to play Carrie’s deeply religious mother, Margaret White.
Not only is the exceptional lineup for Carrie already making us eager, Flanagan hinted that there’s still more to come. He mentioned that the current list is just a part of it; there are many more cast members yet to be revealed, and filming begins in two weeks. Needless to say, he’s exhausted but thrilled to get started!
