Daredevil Born Again Season 2 Could Be the MCU Show’s Last
It’s possible that the Daredevil: Born Again series could conclude with its second season, following reports suggesting a less promising future for the show. The cast, including Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and others, gave stellar performances in the first season. Despite it being my top pick among Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows on Disney+ (excluding Netflix’s The Defenders Saga), there were certain challenges.
The main reason for this is because the storyline of “Daredevil: Born Again” evolved drastically during production for season 1, as Marvel Studios significantly altered the show’s original direction. Fortunately, this change led to Dario Scardapane, who previously worked on Netflix’s “The Punisher,” taking over as showrunner and reintroducing key characters from the initial “Daredevil” series. This resulted in a darker tone that mirrored the original show more closely. However, due to differing creative visions, the show ended up being somewhat inconsistent, which likely had a significant impact on its overall success.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Established A Negative MCU Viewership Record
The MCU Series Did Not Perform As Well As Expected
Despite receiving favorable reviews for “Daredevil: Born Again” within the MCU, it appears that the show failed to attract a significant audience. In fact, it became the first live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe series not to appear even once in Nielsen’s Top 10 Original Streaming Shows List during its entire run (as reported by The Direct). This lackluster viewership was not the only disappointing aspect of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1.
Daredevil: Born Again Viewership According To Nielsen | |
---|---|
After Each Episode | Minutes (Millions) |
Episodes 1 and 2 | 465 |
Episode 3 | 464 |
Episode 4 | 373 |
Episodes 5 and 6 | 344 |
Episode 7 | 470 |
Episode 8 | 463 |
Episode 9 | 385 |
As reported by Nielsen and verified by Variety, the MCU series “Agatha All Along,” which won’t be back for a second season, attracted approximately 9 million viewers within a 35-day timeframe. On the other hand, “Daredevil: Born Again,” which has been renewed for another season, fell short of matching the popularity of the supernatural series, with about 5.8 million viewers in the same period. In the end, “Agatha All Along” placed 45th among shows during the 2024-25 TV season according to Nielsen data, while “Daredevil: Born Again” ranked 92nd due to its low viewership. Given these numbers, it’s possible that the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” may be its final run.
Marvel Currently Has Plans For Multiple Seasons Of The Daredevil Series
Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock Has To Take Back New York City
Despite poor ratings for “Daredevil: Born Again,” Marvel Studios did not cancel the series outright. Originally, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had planned a lengthy first season with 18 episodes for the show. However, this was later reduced to just 9 episodes. The second season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” now confirmed, will have only 8 episodes – one fewer than the initial plan for the second season. Instead of renewing the series for a second season after its premiere, Marvel Studios opted to divide the original order into two seasons.
Despite a potential negative audience response, the studio’s strategy for the show hasn’t been altered, as they were already working on Season 2. Moreover, Marvel is eager to expand the storyline featuring Charlie Cox’s Daredevil beyond that season. In an interview with ScreenRant, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, disclosed their long-term vision for the show, stating, “We’re hoping for Season 3 and Season Infinity” after Season 2 in 2026. However, if viewership fails to improve, these plans may need to be reconsidered.
Daredevil: Born Again Will Have A Crucial Task For The Show’s Future
According to Nielsen ratings, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again needs a significant increase in viewers to prove to Marvel that they should keep producing more seasons. I believe this is achievable given that the new creative team is fully committed to season 2, and they’ve already announced a notable cast addition. Specifically, Krysten Ritter’s character Jessica Jones will reappear on screen for the first time since 2019 in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
In the finale of Daredevil: Born Again, season 1 concluded with Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, emerging victorious and gaining control over New York City through his Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Subsequently, Matt Murdock opted to assemble an army for the upcoming battles. The second season seems poised to introduce Daredevil collaborating with other street-level Marvel Cinematic Universe characters like Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. I anticipate this thrilling narrative trajectory will help increase viewership, but I have concerns that the show may not continue beyond season 2, thereby limiting its full potential.
