Taskmaster creator Alex Horne hosts special competition that’s “most memorable” in 10 years
Alex Horne, the creator of Taskmaster, recently organized a unique competition that he deemed his most significant endeavor over the past ten years.
One day, the funny guy dropped by Seccombe Court, a retirement community nestled in the English village of Adderbury, Oxfordshire. His aim was to present a series of tasks, which were reminiscent of his projects on Channel 4, for four residents to engage in friendly competition against one another.
In one task, the contenders closed their eyes and lifted their hands whenever they believed a full minute had passed; in another, the locals were asked to point out anything associated with pineapples.

In this competition, participants faced tasks such as moving candies between dishes by using a straw, and the finale asked them to construct the tallest structure they could using spaghetti and marshmallows.
As I went head-to-head with these four gaming rivals, I realized they were some of the most competitive opponents I’ve ever faced. They not only showed off diverse approaches to problem-solving, but also creatively twisted my rules to their advantage in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
For the past decade, I’ve hosted Taskmaster events at schools with children, pubs with stags and hens, scout huts with both boys and girls, and offices filled with executives, as well as over a hundred comedians on TV. However, this particular task session stands out as one of the most unforgettable for me.
One competitor initially wasn’t sure about their tasks, and they pondered what they were supposed to do with all the spaghetti. However, Alex was very kind; I felt like I recognized him, but it seems I only knew him from watching TV.
The care home’s manager mentioned that their residents enjoy watching “Taskmaster” and felt it would be fun if they could participate in the tasks themselves, he said.
Everyone really excelled during the competition, and it was fantastic watching their competitive fire ignite. I’d like to express my gratitude to Alex for participating and graciously taking on the role of our event host.”
Or, in a more conversational tone:
“Wow, all four contenders really knocked it out of the park! It was awesome seeing them get competitive. A big shout-out to Alex for being part of this challenge and doing an amazing job hosting us!
