Summary
- Nestlé and Ogilvy Colombia created “Self-Packing Cheese” using biodegradable packaging
- The packaging is made from cheese whey and new bioplastic, which decomposes in 300 days
- The innovation aims to reduce plastic waste
Nestlé Central America recently revealed a compostable cheese packaging made from whey protein, a leftover product created during cheese production.
Working together with Ogilvy Colombia, a novel material has been created, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic film on the “¡Qué Rico!” cheese label in Panama. This groundbreaking bioplastic blends polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) with whey and is engineered to decompose naturally within approximately 300 days.
Instead of traditional plastic that can take up to 900 years to break down, this “self-wrapping” cheese idea presents a more eco-friendly alternative by employing the product itself for packaging. The thin, transparent, and lightweight film represents a substantial stride in minimizing plastic waste. Future plans involve applying this innovation to other products as well.
