Beloved Australian singer and Eclection frontwoman Kerrilee Male dies: ‘May your beautiful voice now sing with the angels’

Eclection frontwoman Kerrilee Male has died.

In more contemporary terms, the iconic singer from the ’60s, known for leading a popular folk-rock group, reportedly spent her final years residing on Magnetic Island, located in the northern region of Queensland.

On Facebook, a fellow music enthusiast paid tribute to Kerrilee by sharing her extensive musical journey following her passing on May 12th.

At the tender age of 19, Kim Challands noted that Kerrilee had already been part of ensembles like The Driftwood Band and The Yarra-Yarra New Orleans Jazz Band, both based in Melbourne.

Later, she joined a three-piece vocal group called Dave’s Place Group and also recorded two extended plays (EPs) alongside the Ray Price Quartet, contributing her voice to their recordings.

She sang as part of a trio in the Dave’s Place Group and made two EPs with the Ray Price Quartet, using her voice for their recording sessions.

1965 saw her making an appearance on the well-known music mix show “Dave’s Place,” which was led by the iconic singer Dave Guard and also starred fellow musician Judy Henske.

Following her relocation to the UK from Melbourne in 1967, Kerrilee encountered Trevor Lucas, Georg Kajanus, Michael Rosen, and British native Gerry Conway, who subsequently established the band Eclection together.

In August 1968, Eclection unveiled their self-titled album, which garnered favorable reviews within the music industry, earning comparisons to groups such as The Seekers and The Mamas & The Papas.

Australian music critic Lillian Roxon praised Kerrilee’s powerful vocals, remarking, “Her voice penetrates the mind as deeply as a sharp carving knife.

In the ensuing period, the group commenced performing at various music festivals and concerts throughout Britain, with their second single, a cover of Kaleidoscope’s popular track “Please (Mark II)”, being unveiled in October of that same year.

However, the same month, Kerrilee stepped back from the band and made her way home to Australia.

According to Gerry, their former band member Kerrilee made it clear, during their live performances, that she wasn’t planning on sticking around for much longer.

‘I think she decided she didn’t want to be in the music world.’

Kerrilee’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.

One individual expressed, “Kim, your tribute was simply marvelous! You did an excellent job, and I appreciate you for bringing Kerrilee’s story to light.

Another simply said: ‘A beautiful tribute.’

May your beautiful voice now sing with the angels, RIP Kerrilee,’ another penned.

One admirer tenderly penned, ‘Just as birds naturally sing, some individuals express themselves through song, not seeking recognition or praise, but simply because it’s an integral aspect of who they are.’

Another sent their well-wishes: ‘Condolences to all.. Flying high now dear girl. Very sad news.’
