Initially planned for an autumn debut, the movie’s release has been postponed. Instead, it will make its first appearance on a streaming platform on January 16, 2025.
Under the guidance of director Joe Carnahan, the cast of The Rip includes stars such as Steven Yeun, Nésto Carbonell, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler, and Lina Esco.
Regarding the film, Carnahan shared with Tudum that it was influenced by real-life events. He explained, “The Rip” originated from a profoundly personal experience that my friend encountered, not only as a father but also as the head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department.
In an interview, Carnahan revealed that his enduring affection for 1970s cop thrillers also contributed to the making of the film.
The creation was partly influenced by his life experiences and my long-standing appreciation for ’70s cop thrillers, which emphasized character development and interpersonal relationships. These movies served as cultural landmarks during that time, with examples like “Serpico,” “Prince of the City,” and more recently, Michael Mann’s “Heat.
Simultaneously, the director shared insights into his experience collaborating with Affleck and Damon, who jointly produced the film along with Luciana Damon and Dani Bernfeld under their production firm, Artists Equity.
Working alongside Matt and Ben, who are not only talented filmmakers but also hold key positions in the studio, turned out to be the perfect blend. As creative partners and studio heads, they made the experience on “The Rip” unparalleled for me. I’ve never found filmmaking as smooth-sailing as it was with them. They provided exceptional care and always supported my decisions throughout the process.
The Rip will release globally on Netflix on January 16, 2026.
