Jason Sudeikis Honors Uncle George Wendt as a True Comedy Hero
Jason Sudeikis has enjoyed a lengthy and thriving career, adorned with SAG awards, Golden Globes, and Primetime Emmys, in the realms of comedy, scriptwriting, and acting. Yet, according to him, none of this would have materialized without the impact of his uncle, George Wendt – a star on ‘Cheers’, who regrettably passed away earlier this year.
Over the weekend, Jason Sudeikis participated in a panel discussion at the annual fundraising event, the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend, which benefits Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. During this occasion, he paid tribute to someone special.
Sudeikis stated, “He’s just as entertaining, considerate, and friendly as any character he portrayed on screen. Contrary to the common saying ‘Don’t meet your heroes,’ they often disappoint you, but that’s not the case with him.
Sudeikis stated that he was significantly inspired by him, saying, “He was a trailblazer for me, hailing from the Midwest and proving that acting could be a viable career if one truly has passion for it. Moreover, he managed to maintain strong family ties and connections to his roots – in Chicago where he originated, as well as at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Notably, he spent an impressive amount of time at Mike’s Bar.
However, everything was leading up to the role he is famously recognized for, and indeed, it was a worthwhile investment of time. The actor and I concur, we deeply miss him and hold him dear.
Every moment was dedicated towards the part he’s renowned for, making it all valuable. To that end, we both yearn for his return and cherish him.
George Wendt Is Known for His Role on Cheers
For the entire 275-episode duration of the sitcom “Cheers”, Wendt portrayed the character Norm Peterson. Interestingly, he was the first character from the supporting cast to join the main ensemble. However, as time passed, he frequently interacted with Cliff Clavin, a chatty postman known for his fabricated trivia, and later, a snobbish psychotherapist who eventually develops affection towards the bar staff.
George Wendt’s character and persona in the show “Cheers” served as a miniature representation of what made the series a hit. His witty comebacks like, “‘What’s going on Norm?’ ‘Let’s not talk about what’s going on Norm, let’s talk about what’s going in Norm;… 2 beers, right here'” were just one example. Moreover, his display of warmth and camaraderie with the rest of the cast was crucial in creating the sense of familiarity that “Cheers” offered its audience. The show made you feel as if you were part of a friendly bar where everyone knew your name, and characters like George Wendt’s George and Norm Peterson played a significant role in achieving this ambiance.
Wendt will be missed – as a doting family man, a devoted friend, and a beloved actor.
