10 Most Fun Side Quests You Probably Missed in Oblivion Remastered
As a gamer, I can’t help but dive into the vast world of Oblivion Remastered, where every corner holds a new adventure waiting to be discovered. My journey through Cyrodiil is filled with so many quests that it feels like an endless sea of possibilities. In fact, most players don’t even manage to complete the main quest before their time in Tamriel comes to an end. The beauty of this game lies in the hidden gems; some quests can only be uncovered by joining certain factions or striking up a conversation with specific NPCs. This means that many quests might slip through the cracks for those who don’t explore thoroughly, making each playthrough feel unique and rewarding.
Not every mission shares the same quality; some are merely fetch or slay tasks with minimal charm. The ones that truly stand out offer players a grand journey, present unforgettable scenes or characters, or deliver engaging gameplay. With a multitude of missions at hand, it’s challenging to sift through them all to find those worth pursuing, as even the most intriguing ones may appear deceptively straightforward initially.
Getting There Can Be a Chore
In the original downloadable content (DLC) for Oblivion called “Knights of the Nine,” players assume the role of a holy crusader dedicated to the nine deities. Their mission is to locate their relics and ultimately use them to vanquish Umaril the Unfeathered, a former Ayleid sorcerer-king who had previously enslaved much of Tamriel. Interestingly, Umaril had forged an alliance with Meridia, the Daedric prince of life and light, who bestowed upon him immortality. However, in Oblivion Remastered, this questline is no longer DLC but part of the main game.
In essence, this implies that merely destroying his corporeal form isn’t sufficient; instead, the player must pursue his spirit to completely eliminate the threat. It’s an incredibly thrilling scene as the player engages in aerial combat with Umaril over the Imperial City. The prelude involves players navigating through an ancient ruin alongside their fellow crusaders, who they’ve enlisted on their journey. Unfortunately, the beginning of this quest can be quite laborious due to the tedious process of starting the ‘Knights of the Nine’.
An Introduction to Thievery
The initial quest for the Thieves Guild, while sometimes overlooked, presents an engaging concept. In this mission, several individuals, including the player, aim to join the guild, but there’s only space for one member. Armand, our thieves’ guild connection, assigns each aspirant a task: steal a diary. Whoever manages to retrieve the object first is declared the victor. It’s a tense competition as the other contenders will swiftly move to secure the item before anyone else does.
In this contest, there are several paths to victory for the participant. They might aim to arrive first, or alternatively, they could bide their time and swipe another competitor’s diary without them noticing. Interestingly, if the participant doesn’t succeed, they’ll be granted a second chance the following evening, ensuring no failure is permanent. For this mission, the participant needs to pilfer a sword from ‘A Fighting Chance’ located in the Market District, but fortunately, there will be no rivalry for them to contend with.
Faking a Man’s Death For Fun and Profit
In the game Oblivion, the Dark Brotherhood is home to some exceptional quests, and among them, a few truly shine. One such mission early on is titled “The Assassinated Man,” where players are tasked with orchestrating the murder of Francois Motierre in Chorrol. Francois owes a significant debt to some unsavory characters and has failed to make a payment. Even though he now has the money, they’ll still take his life. The Dark Brotherhood requires the player to “dispose” of Francois using a poisoned weapon, ensuring that another hired assassin witnesses the act.
This mission stands out as it immerses players deeply into the assassin’s role rather than merely executing assassinations. Instead of directly attacking Francois with poison, players must bide their time and let another assassin appear. Once convinced by the performance, they can use the poison but must ensure they escape town without killing the other assassin to complete the mission successfully. Failing to do so could result in mission failure.
Technically a Faction, But With Only One Quest
The Arena stands out as one of the most memorable quests within the game ‘Oblivion.’ At any point during gameplay, players can engage in this bloodsport held in the Imperial City for some extra coin. The objective is to defeat a sequence of opponents, starting from Pit Dog and progressing all the way up to Grand Champion. On first glance, it may seem like just another RPG arena; however, what sets it apart are its unique features such as the announcer and other non-player characters.
In the Bloodworks arena, Owyn serves as the Blademaster. At first, he underestimates newcomers, believing they won’t survive even one battle. But as players climb the rankings, Owyn gradually grows more accepting of them and is even won over when they eventually claim the title of Champion. During each fight, an announcer enthusiastically introduces the contest and a crowd encourages the player on.
A Champion’s Fall
In the current champion’s domain, you’ll encounter a half-orc named Agronak gro-Malog, also known as the Grey Prince. During a conversation with him at Bloodworks, he requests your aid in uncovering evidence of his noble lineage, since his mother claimed his father held a noble title. He directs you towards Crowhaven and hands you an enigmatic key that unlocks an ancient door within the ruins. While your search for proof confirms Agronak’s noble birth to some extent, there is a twist: his true father turns out to be a vampire.
This implies that Agronak being a part-vampire significantly impacts his character, making him believe he’s cursed and a spawn of evil when the player interacts with him. If the player finishes this quest prior to the arena battle, Agronak will show no resistance during the fight. However, if the arena is completed before this quest, it results in failure because Agronak has already perished. In simpler terms, if you talk to Agronak when he’s a part-vampire and you’ve not yet fought him at the arena, he won’t put up much of a fight when you eventually do battle; but if you defeat him in the arena before addressing his vampiric issues, you’ll fail the quest because Agronak is already deceased.
From Rats to Mountain Lions
In the Fighters Guild missions of Anvil, a quest called “A Rat Problem” arises. Here, players are assigned to help Arvena Thelas with her rat predicament. Upon reaching her location, it’s discovered that the issue isn’t actually rats; they’re her beloved pets. Instead, the real problem is that mountain lions have been sneaking into her basement and eradicating the rats. Suspicion points to her neighbor, Quill-Weave, as the possible perpetrator.
In this scenario, players must follow Quill-Weave around town and catch her in the process of placing meat near Thelas’ basement window, which isn’t an attempt to attract mountain lions but rather a way to deal with rats infesting the basement. City guards will handle the rats once they are alerted. Whether players choose to inform on Quill-Weave or not determines their reward; if they do, they receive a permanent increase in Acrobatics or Speechcraft skills.
A Heist Gone Wrong
In Bruma, overhearing gossip may eventually guide players towards Arnora Auria, who alleges her boyfriend, Jorundr, attempted to elope with her wealth. However, he’s now imprisoned within the city’s jail. Engaging with Arnora when her mood is favorable commences a quest. She confides that she and Jorundr are actually thieves, only taking what they need to survive. One day, Jorundr sought a larger heist.
In this scenario, Jorundr conceals the treasure, and Arnora desires the player to uncover its location. However, conversing with him suggests that, as far as he’s concerned, it was Arnora who stashed the money away. The player must decide on a course of action by either eliminating Arnora and presenting Jorundr with her amulet, deceiving Jorundr by acquiring Arnora’s amulet, or double-crossing both parties to grab the treasure and flee. Despite having limited outcomes, there are numerous engaging paths to navigate.
A Knight of the White Stallion
The character Mazoga, who is an Orc, is also a quest that players can undertake. By listening to gossip in Leyawiin, players learn about Mazoga, an Orc who claims to be a knight. Players can locate her in the main hall of Leyawiin Castle where the count asks them to discover what she desires. She instructs the player to address her as Sir Mazoga and seek out a local hunter named Weebam-Na. Following this, she requests the player’s help in taking her to Fisherman’s Rock.
Upon her arrival, she confronts Mogens Wind-Shifter and attacks him. She explains that Mogens and his group are responsible for the murder of her dearest friend, leading her to take on the role of a self-proclaimed knight, swearing vengeance. This encounter takes place in Cyrodiil, and in the upcoming quest, players can spend more time with Mazoga. In this quest, she and the player will join forces as Knights of the White Stallion, accompanying the player until the quest is finished.
A Living Painting
Among the memorable quests in the game “Oblivion” is one titled “A Brush with Death.” In the town of Chedinhal, players can come across whispers about a misplaced painting. Upon meeting Tivela, the painter’s wife, she reveals that her husband Rythe has secluded himself in his studio. The player then manages to open the locked door and discovers an empty room except for a peculiar painting. By engaging with this painting, the player enters its world, where they find Rythe trapped after a thief made off with his enchanted paintbrush.
To successfully complete the quest, players must delve into this miniature realm to locate the thief’s lifeless body and reclaim the stolen painting. As they progress, they will encounter six distinctly designed trolls as obstacles. What sets this adventure apart is its captivating visuals. The game adopts an artistic, watercolor style within the painted world. It’s strikingly beautiful and completely one of a kind, with no other part of the game resembling the distinctive aesthetic of the painted world in A Brush with Death.
A Murder Mystery Where the Player is the Murderer
Once more, the Dark Brotherhood offers some of the game’s most engaging quests. In contrast to “The Assassinated Man,” this quest does require players to carry out a real murder – multiple ones, indeed. Guided by Ocheeva, the player is sent to Skingrad to meet Fafnir, a Dark Brotherhood agent disguised as a doorkeeper for a party at Summitmist Manor. Upon gaining entry, the players are charged with eliminating all other party guests.
As a cunning gamer in this intriguing manor-set treasure hunt, I find myself in an unusual predicament. Instead of simply taking everyone down in a brutal showdown, I’m tasked with maintaining the ruse that I’m not the killer. The twist? We’re all part of a game where we’ve been split up for the hunt. Yet, my objective remains the same: to devise clever methods to eliminate them, thereby creating doubt among the remaining participants about who the real killer is. This could involve slipping poison into apples, striking from afar with arrows or spells, or even manipulating others into turning against each other. It’s a deadly game of deception and survival.
