Director André Øvredal says his upcoming 2026 horror film will be his most frightening to date—a bold claim considering he directed one of the scariest supernatural movies ever made. The film, titled Passenger, is his newest project.
He’s built a successful career directing truly frightening movies, including his own version of Dracula. And based on the new trailer, his latest project looks fantastic. In fact, he’s told Bloody Disgusting it might be the scariest movie he’s ever made.
What’s really striking about the director’s comment is that he says this despite already having created one of the most terrifying supernatural movies ever made.
In the 2016 horror film, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, a mortician and his son investigate the death of an unidentified woman during an autopsy. As they try to uncover her identity and cause of death, strange and terrifying events begin to occur in the morgue.
Many horror fans consider Jane Doe a hidden gem. Over the last decade, it’s gained a reputation as a great choice for viewers seeking something different, and it remains surprisingly effective even now.
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe Is One Of The Most Terrifying Films Ever Made
What truly sets The Autopsy of Jane Doe apart is its masterful use of isolation and claustrophobia. The entire film takes place in the confined space of a funeral home basement, with a raging thunderstorm happening outside, heightening the sense of being trapped.
Being trapped with no escape made everything so much scarier. Honestly, every little sound – a creak, a footstep – was enough to give me goosebumps as the night went on, and things just kept getting worse and worse. It was truly terrifying!
The movie is made even better by its intriguing mystery. The secrets surrounding Jane Doe’s death captivate both the characters and the audience, leaving everyone eager to uncover the truth.
From unexplained injuries to strange symbols carved into skin, the movie constantly presents mysteries that finally come together in a shocking and satisfying conclusion.
If Passenger Matches The Fear Of Jane Doe, It Will Be A Huge Hit
Because Jane Doe has become so popular with horror fans, it created a lot of expectations for director Øvredal. But the new trailer suggests he might have actually outdone himself and made an even better film.
The film immediately establishes a very dark and unsettling atmosphere, which is perfect for a story about a woman being stalked during a journey. The idea of facing the unknown while traveling is already frightening, and the film cleverly uses this to build suspense and explore its terrifying story.
Images of a church on fire and a field filled with body bags suggest this movie will be a psychological horror, aiming to disturb and unsettle viewers long after the credits roll.
This feels very much like the movie Jane Doe, as the body increasingly disturbs the morticians as they investigate, and it’s clear André Øvredal is intentionally building on the elements that made his previous hit film successful, aiming to surpass it.
Viewers will soon find out if the new movie, Passenger, is as good as André Øvredal’s previous hit, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, when it comes out on May 22, 2026. While the film still holds many mysteries, director André Øvredal has the potential to make it even better than his most acclaimed supernatural thriller.
