Noted surf documentary maker Jack McCoy passed away at the age of 76, a few days after concluding his 20th anniversary tour in Australia for his timeless 2004 film “Blue Horizon”.

The Los Angeles-born movie director died earlier this week after several years of poor health.

His illustrious career was characterized by his passion for recording the allure and excitement of surfing through filmmaking.

From the 1970s through the 2010s, this individual produced an impressive collection of films that not only depicted surfing but also served as a catalyst for inspiration among both surfers and cinephiles across the globe.

McCoy’s passing was confirmed by his family in a heartbreaking statement on social media.

In a deep sense of sorrow, I find myself compelled to convey the news that our cherished patriarch, our esteemed leader, like a skilled surfer catching one last perfect wave, has departed from us. Now, he finds eternal tranquility in the heavens above.

Unique in every sense, he was adored by countless individuals. Through his storytelling, artwork, and above all, his ardor for the environment and the Aloha spirit, he stirred, affected, and inspired the hearts of millions worldwide.

McCoy frequently traveled to Australia, fostering close connections within their vibrant surfing scene, often to spread enthusiasm for the activity.

Among the Australian surf legends he had friendships with were Mark Occhilupo, Luke Egan, Taj Burrow, and Nathan Hedge.

Distraught by the news, numerous individuals from the surfing community have been expressing their condolences on social media, honoring McCoy’s memory.

Australian retired pro-surfer Taj Burrow expressed his condolences by writing, ‘I’m truly saddened. Sending a lot of affection to Jack, his loved ones, companions, and admirers. A true legend.’

Luke Egan added, “Over the years, we’ve shared countless beautiful moments together, Jack. You’ve taught me, as well as many others, so much.

24th May marked the conclusion of the 20th anniversary tour in Australia for his iconic 2004 surf film “Blue Horizon,” which ended only a few days before his demise.

Over a 13-day span, McCoy organized exclusive film showcases at various cinemas nationwide, in addition to leading interactive question and answer discussions for passionate surfers.

This legendary movie follows the intense competition between two skilled surfers vying for the world championship, and includes conversations with renowned wave riders Kelly Slater and Mark Occhilupo.

McCoy consistently broke new ground in surf movie production throughout his professional journey, employing creative methods to truly convey the spirit of the sport.

He is survived by his wife Kelly and their two children, Indiana and Cooper.
