I Hate Vietnam

Despite Modern Family wrapping up more than five years back, its popularity continues unabated. To this day, it stands as one of the funniest series available on Hulu, with many viewers able to instantly identify their favorite character. For me, it’s Lily Tucker-Pritchett, appreciated for her spunk and sharp humor. Interestingly, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays Lily, is disclosing some of the hilarious lines fans often quote at her, which undeniably reinforces my preference.

Anyone who watches Modern Family knows that Lily can say some pretty out of pocket things, and it’s what makes her such a fun and lovable character. She has a lot of iconic quotes, but there is one that has stuck out to a lot of people. After watching a clip from Modern Family, the actress shared with ET that she gets quoted one pretty hilarious line all the time, which, out of context, may be taken the wrong way, and it makes it even better:

In the comments section, you’ll find it possible to share any content, and there’s always a chance someone might write something negative like, “I dislike Vietnam!” or similar sentiments.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t forget that unforgettable moment in “Modern Family” Season 4, Episode 19, titled “The Future Dunphys.” In this episode, Mitch, Cam, and their family matriarch Gloria, took Lily to a Vietnamese restaurant to foster a deeper connection with her heritage. Although it might not rank among the best episodes of this timeless sitcom, it remains one of my all-time favorites.

In a humorous turn of events at a Vietnamese restaurant, Lily repeatedly expresses her dislike for Vietnam, voicing her opinion rather emphatically. A scene ensues where she declares, “I’m gay!” in response to Mitch denying her sexuality. This misunderstanding leads to Lily feeling perplexed, while Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s character recognizes he may be exhibiting behavior similar to his father, despite being gay himself.

Later on, Lily mentions her desire to share a connection with her fathers, which is why she declared herself gay and expressed dislike towards Vietnam. While the motive behind her statements becomes endearing, the scene remains quite amusing. Moreover, it’s fascinating that Anderson-Emmons appears unable to escape references to this event, even online or in public, over a decade after the episode first aired, which adds to its humor.

Despite Anderson-Emmons graciously accepting being quoted with the unlucky yet amusing line from Modern Family and appreciating her time on the show, the 17-year-old advises against child acting. Having been just two years old when she got the role as Lily, she has chosen to focus on regular teenage life since the series ended. Earlier, she had also expressed that it’s best to pursue acting only when one is certain it’s their calling.

As a film enthusiast, it’s challenging to conceive the transformation of Modern Family without Aubrey Anderson-Emmons’ portrayal of Lily. Her vibrant character adds a unique spark and wit that undeniably sets her apart. The legendary lines that we cherish wouldn’t have the same impact if not delivered with her charming energy, making it clear just how significant her role is in shaping the show’s iconic essence.
