The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Finale’s SHOCKING Returns

⚠️ Attention: Episode 10 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 (the series finale) introduces the return of Alexis Bledel reprising her role as Emily Malek. Emily, who had departed from the series following Season 4, was shown to have returned to Gilead to carry on resisting the regime that seized control over the United States. However, for the majority of Season 6, it appeared as though Emily’s destiny would remain unknown.

It’s gratifying to see that The Handmaid’s Tale made space to feature Emily in its conclusion, despite needing to tie up numerous plot threads and establish the premise for its upcoming sequel, The Testaments. The reappearance of Emily, as well as Alexis Bledel who hadn’t been seen on TV since her departure, was a pleasant surprise. Additionally, the other returns in that episode were crucial in wrapping up this story effectively.

Why Alexis Bledel’s Emily Returned In The Handmaid’s Tale’s Series Finale

Emily Coming Back Had A Callback To Season 1

Emily’s comeback in “The Handmaid’s Tale” can be seen as satisfying fans, but it’s a positive kind of fan service. Her tale is one of the series’ finest, given the hardships she faced in Gilead. Her escape and reunion with her family could have been a fitting conclusion for her, but instead, she chose to return and keep fighting. It feels just right that we finally got some insight into what became of her after all these years.

In a similar vein to June, Emily has persistently worked towards improving the world for those dear to her. Her role within the resistance in Bridgeport, masked as a Martha, has been unveiled, and she continues to maintain contact with her wife, Sylvia, and son, Oliver. This underscores the complexity of this narrative that extends beyond what we’ve witnessed with June, emphasizing the true magnitude of the struggle.

At the same time, this revelation brings renewed optimism that Gilead can be overthrown, allowing June to be reunited with her daughters when the conflict concludes. As Emily puts it, the concept of “impossible” has been redefined.

In the final episode of The Handmaid’s Tale series, a familiar character reappeared, tying up loose ends and bringing the story full circle. She remembered the ice cream parlor with an exceptional salted caramel flavor from the show’s debut episode, which hinted at Emily/Ofglen’s deception and sparked their shared quest for rebellion, escape, and eventual return to fight once more. As they strolled down the street side by side, just as they did at the start, in pairs… but now, as liberated women, standing up against the oppressive regime together.

What Alexis Bledel Said About Her Handmaid’s Tale Return

The Actress Has Commented On Playing Emily One More Time

Bledel voluntarily decided to depart from the TV series, apparently for private matters, but she eagerly accepted the opportunity to return for the finale, providing Emily with a sense of resolution. Given her significant role in the show over an extended period, it was only fitting that she was invited back, and she readily agreed, as she disclosed to THR.

As soon as the idea was proposed, it resonated deeply with me. It seemed fitting to wrap up Emily’s tale gracefully, providing viewers with a satisfying ending. With Bruce [Miller] gathering such a compassionate and gifted team, and many of the original crew still on board for season six, the whole production feels like a finely tuned mechanism – everyone is giving their all. I can hardly wait to see what they come up with in The Testaments.

My wish is that audience members carry with them the idea to maintain hope even during difficult times, when things may appear unattainable. Just as it sometimes seems that the seeds you sow won’t grow, go ahead and plant seeds of hope anyhow. There’s always a chance they will flourish.

Alma & Brianna Also Returned For The Handmaid’s Tale’s Ending

The Two Handmaids Were Killed In Season 4

In addition to Emily, characters Alma (Nina Kiri) and Brianna (Bahia Watson) also make a comeback after an extended absence. Much like Emily, they were integral Handmaids who played significant roles in June’s uprising against Gilead throughout the series. Tragically, both met their end by attempting to cross a train track during season 4, but the show creatively brings them back in a moving manner.

In June’s dream sequence, Alma and Brianna are pictured alongside Emily, Rita, and Moira, dancing carefree in a Boston nightclub – a place untouched by Gilead. This scene symbolizes what life might have been for them if Gilead had not seized power. The camaraderie they share is poignant, underscoring the loss, the ongoing struggle, and the lingering hope that remains.

All six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale are now streaming on Hulu.
