The Handmaid’s Tale Creator Reveals Why the Finale Was So Different

The person responsible for crafting Hulu’s shares insights on why the final episode was significantly less action-packed compared to the preceding installments.

In an interview, Bruce Miller, creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, was questioned about the sudden change from intense to more subdued tones in the final episode compared to the two preceding ones. “I considered it within the context of it being the last episode of a series, not the finale,” Miller said, “but rather the concluding installment of a series that accurately wrapped up your experience.

Miller explained, “The show for me was more a quiet pondering of trauma than a loud, dramatic one. When I look back at it now, what stands out most are moments when June is deep in thought, often those were the saddest or most moving scenes. It seemed to me that we were returning to June’s perspective, allowing her to reflect on events we had seen and also the aftermath of significant incidents.

In an effort to ensure the finale was as powerful as possible, Miller stated, “In essence, I wasn’t intending to craft a symbolic narrative. My goal was to create a captivating television episode, and there are many weak finales out there. I also kept in mind the principle of ‘First do no harm.’ I aimed not to alter the show’s dynamics by introducing changes. I had discussed this ending with Elisabeth Moss, possibly even before she joined the show, about how it might conclude. What we were striving towards didn’t seem to be her returning to Boston, her recording her story, or any of those elements. Instead, they felt like things we had already moved past.

The Handmaid’s Tale Has Ended Its Run

According to Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel with the same title, the show has received widespread acclaim from both critics and viewers. The show features Elizabeth Moss portraying June Osborne, also known as Offred, a woman residing in the oppressive future nation of Gilead, previously the United States of America, which is now a theocratic dictatorship where women are harshly oppressed. The series has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, such as the 2018 Peabody Award and the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Television Series.

The last episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” aired on May 27, concluding the series with a thoughtful ending that had fewer action sequences compared to the rest of its sixth and final season. Although “The Handmaid’s Tale” has concluded, the narrative it presented is far from finished. In March, news broke about the upcoming spin-off series, “The Testaments,” based on Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name. This novel introduces three female characters: Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy. Notably, Daisy shows curiosity about Gilead from her location in Canada, where she was secretly smuggled by her Handmaid mother before the book’s events unfolded.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available for streaming now on Hulu.
