Pierce Brosnan has addressed the criticism of his Irish accent in Paramount+ crime drama MobLand.

In the latest series, the actor known for playing James Bond appears beside Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren. He portrays Conrad Harrigan, a crime family head, who unwillingly gets entangled in a conflict with a rival criminal group.

As a gamer, I couldn’t help but notice the unusual Irish accent of one of the actors in our favorite show. It’s been over a decade since he was born and raised there, but many viewers are finding it hard to believe his portrayal. After the series premiere in March, I heard some pretty harsh comments like “terrible” and “atrocious” when people talked about his accent.

In his recent interview with RadioTimes (as reported by MetroOnline), Brosnan noted that his own accent is quite soft, while Conrad’s accent is significantly different.

The actor disclosed that he sought assistance from a dialect instructor, requesting a Kerry accent. He further stated, “Consequently, the coach recommended a certain individual, whom I looked up online. And there it was – an authentic Kerry accent. So, I immersed myself wholeheartedly in adopting it.

During a chat on Today FM, Brosnan shared that he previously voiced his accent-related worries to MobLand’s director, Guy Ritchie, prior to shooting the series last year.

Over the summer, I had my initial conversation with Guy regarding that matter, and he suggested not to fret about it since they would handle it in a quick 15-minute session on the day. His advice was to clear my mind, as they’d take care of the rest, so I should not worry about it.

Absolutely, when I set my phone aside, I couldn’t help but fret about it. Some five weeks later, there I was on set alongside Tom Hardy and another actor. It was our first day, the dialogue was crucial, the information vital, and he simply instructed, “More Irish, more Irish.

In a subsequent statement, Brosnan mentioned that over time, his Irish accent had become less pronounced, resembling more of a California-style speech pattern. He then pondered, “What accent should I adopt?” and found it to be from the region of Kerry.

Born in the town of Drogheda, County Louth, the actor then resided primarily in Navan, County Meath during his early years. Later on, his family shifted to Scotland, and eventually, they settled in London.

This weekend (June 1st), the series “MobLand,” set to air its last episode, boasts a star-studded cast that includes Paddy Considine from “House of the Dragon,” Mandeep Dhillon from “After Life,” Joanne Froggatt from “Downton Abbey,” and Jasmine Jobson from “Top Boy.
