Warning! SPOILERS about Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 18 ahead.
In the upcoming season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo’s expanded role may help resolve Meredith’s long-standing conflict that began in season 21. Since relocating to Boston during season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith has primarily dedicated her time to studying Alzheimer’s disease under the guidance of the Fox Foundation. Although this move provided her with resources and a lab to continue her research, it also restricted her ability to pursue her own research direction as Catherine wanted her to adhere to established scientific consensus. This tension between them escalated in season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy.
In the finale of season 20, when Meredith and Amelia revealed their research findings, it infuriated Catherine. However, in the premiere of season 21, Catherine found herself in a weakened state in Meredith’s presence. This incident gave Meredith more leverage with her Alzheimer’s study, but it didn’t lead to a reconciliation between Meredith and Catherine, as they continued to avoid each other. This strained relationship also caused tension between Meredith and Richard during Grey’s Anatomy season 21, intensifying the feud between Catherine and Meredith. The ending of season 21 suggested potential resolutions to their conflict.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Finale Sets Up Meredith’s Bigger Role In Season 22
Meredith Is Set To Split Her Time Between Boston & Seattle

In the final episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, Meredith went to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital with the goal of selling her shares that she had acquired along with the Seattle Grace Five after the plane crash in season 8, using the settlement money. By deciding to let go of these shares, Meredith demonstrated her commitment to completing her Alzheimer’s research project since it meant cutting her last direct ties to Grey Sloan. However, the events that unfolded during the season 21 finale stirred emotions in Meredith, causing her to remember all the loved ones she left behind in Seattle whom she couldn’t share life with while living in Boston.
Meredith found a new insight that caused her to alter her decision to sell her shares to Catherine and the Fox Foundation. Although she was still open to selling them, Meredith also sought an agreement ensuring she could return as a general surgeon at Grey Sloan, rather than serving as chief, because her research kept Meredith far from the operating room. Additionally, Meredith’s increased role in Grey’s Anatomy season 22 provided another subtle advantage by convincing Catherine to allow Meredith and Amelia to use her labs for their research, which might bring about a more amicable reconciliation between Meredith and Catherine.
Meredith & Catherine’s Feud Ending Can Result In Jackson’s Return
Jackson Expressed His Wish To Support Meredith’s Study In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21’s Premiere

In the upcoming season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Catherine may reconnect as Meredith uses Catherine’s labs, despite Catherine’s cool behavior towards Meredith. Such a development could bring these two characters back into each other’s lives for the first time in a while. Moreover, this potential reconciliation opens up an opportunity to explore another storyline, especially considering that the Fox Foundation has been sending instructions and cease-and-desist letters to anyone trying to fund Meredith’s research in season 21. Jackson even expressed his desire for Meredith to continue working with the foundation. In simpler terms, Catherine’s agreement to Meredith’s plan could help them both tackle a new storyline together.
In the final season of Grey’s Anatomy, Jackson’s persuasive words managed to get Meredith to apologize to Catherine, which ultimately led to a dramatic turn of events with Catherine collapsing. This unexpected twist set off a chain of events that resulted in Meredith agreeing to treat Catherine, while keeping it a secret from everyone else, and leaving the Fox Foundation in exchange. However, the show didn’t delve into Jackson’s desire to be a part of the Alzheimer’s study, even though it was him who introduced Meredith to the foundation in the first place. The arrangements made between Meredith and Catherine left Jackson out in the cold, as he had hoped to contribute to the Alzheimer’s research alongside Amelia and Nick.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Can Significantly Advance Meredith’s Alzheimer Study
Meredith & Catherine Mending Fences Would Greatly Work In That Direction

In the 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith’s pathway led her to grasp the challenging situation she faced, as many backed Koracick’s viewpoint on disregarding female mice in his research, which limited its applicability to a portion of the populace. Facing hurdles with the Fox Foundation and locating sponsors for her study, Meredith made a decisive move by prioritizing her research over the politics associated with it, funding the project herself. This self-funding tactic allowed her to stand firm in her position and refute Ellis’s harsh criticism in Grey’s Anatomy season 21.
In her quest to cure Alzheimer’s, Meredith requires a strong institution for support. Reuniting with the Fox Foundation once more, where she can collaborate with pioneering surgeon Catherine, could provide them both with an opportunity to make this groundbreaking discovery. This would also allow Jackson to rejoin the study as he had initially desired, and such a turn of events aligns well with the medical drama’s ongoing themes. It appears that Grey’s Anatomy season 22 might be headed in this direction, following the thawing of Catherine and Meredith’s animosity in the closing moments of season 21.
