The TV series “Breaking Bad” stands among the all-time greats, and its spin-off, “Better Call Saul,” is often hailed as one of the finest prequels out there. These shows boast intricate characters whose stories unfold in a captivating manner throughout both productions. For “Better Call Saul,” not only does it delve deeper into Bob Odenkirk’s morally ambiguous character, Jimmy McGill (Saul Goodman), but it enriches the narrative of “Breaking Bad,” which is one of the best outcomes for a prequel storyline.
Indeed, some TV spin-offs can be quite disappointing, and this is unfortunate even for a series as exceptional as Breaking Bad. While Better Call Saul stands out as one of the greatest TV spin-offs ever made, enhancing the intricate character development in Breaking Bad, another part of the franchise fell short in almost every aspect. As Better Call Saul gained more popularity, the prequel titled Better Call Saul Presents: Slippin’ Jimmy prematurely premiered before the final season.
Slippin’ Jimmy Is A Bizarre Reminder Of How Prequels Can Miss The Mark
Slippin’ Jimmy Was A Terrible Prequel To Better Call Saul
Instead of Slippin’ Jimmy, we have a generic and peculiar comedy that focuses on the younger days of Jimmy McGill, a character you may recognize from Better Call Saul. The brief animated spin-off series that explores his high school years premiered on AMC+ in 2022. Luckily, Slippin’ Jimmy has mostly been overlooked due to its lack of significance.
Slippin’ Jimmy reveals the pitfall of subpar prequels, as they often fail to offer significant plot or character growth to the franchise, instead focusing solely on capitalizing on the popular IP they are based on. Essentially, Slippin’ Jimmy appears to be a typical animated series that relies on the Breaking Bad brand without striving for greatness independently. The major flaw in Slippin’ Jimmy lies in its significant tonal disparity compared to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, given that it is a comedy series. This dissonance was inevitable due to the genre change.
Better Call Saul Could’ve Been Just A Saul Goodman Spinoff With No Depth
Better Call Saul Was Originally Envisioned As A Sitcom
Slippin’ Jimmy brings attention to the fact that there was a real risk for Better Call Saul to become just another run-of-the-mill Breaking Bad spinoff with no substance. After Breaking Bad became one of the greatest shows in history, several ideas for spinoffs were proposed to expand the franchise. Initially, Better Call Saul was conceived as a half-hour sitcom featuring Saul Goodman in a legal comedy setting. Interestingly enough, this concept might have been more like Slippin’ Jimmy than the actual Better Call Saul we know today.
Thankfully, the developers decided to abandon that concept and instead introduced us to Better Call Saul mere two years following the conclusion of Breaking Bad. The series ran for six remarkable seasons before wrapping up in 2022. Better Call Saul delved into the grittier elements of the Breaking Bad universe while also injecting a more sophisticated wit compared to shows like Slippin’ Jimmy.
Breaking Bad Deserved A Spinoff As Great As Better Call Saul
Both Shows Are Some Of The Best Television Ever Made
If there was ever a chance for “Breaking Bad” to have a spin-off, “Better Call Saul” would likely be the most satisfying outcome anyone could hope for. “Breaking Bad” is one of television’s greatest accomplishments, and a show of such quality deserved a successor that could continue its impressive legacy. Fortunately, “Better Call Saul” fits the bill perfectly, and in some ways, it even outshines “Breaking Bad”. Both series are outstanding from start to finish.
Instead of exploiting the intellectual property or introducing elements discordant with its predecessor, “Better Call Saul” enriches the timeline of “Breaking Bad” by offering a deeper look into Saul Goodman and delving into other original characters in intriguing ways. “Better Call Saul” is an exceptional spin-off of “Breaking Bad,” and thankfully, “Slippin’ Jimmy” doesn’t seem out of place within this universe.
