The Last of Us creators break down season finale after that cliffhanger

MAJOR spoilers follow for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7.

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the co-creators of The Last of Us, have provided insights into the events of the season two finale, following the shocking cliffhanger.

Yesterday in the U.S. and today in the UK, the climactic episode of season two unfolded with a powerful and sorrowful conclusion.

After I took out two of Abby’s WLF crew in Seattle, it felt like my quest was over. I thought I might as well bid farewell to the city and my long-standing grudge.

At the climactic scene inside the theater, Ellie and Jesse (Young Mazino) encountered Abby in the foyer, who had a gun pointed at Tommy (Gabriel Luna).

Or more informally:
At the grand finale inside the theater, Ellie and Young Mazino ran into Abby in the lobby, who was threatening Tommy with a gun.

Before aiming at Ellie, Abby fired a shot into Jesse’s head. Ellie pleaded with her not to take any more lives, but the scene faded to darkness as an additional gunshot echoed.

Inquired about the implications for Ellie and Dina since Jesse, the father of Dina’s unborn child and a close friend as well as former lover of Ellie, has passed away, Druckmann explained to Deadline: “Obviously, such an event would have a profound effect, given his role as the baby’s father, but also considering their close relationship.

At the end of the episode, Abby stirs awake and the phrase “Seattle Day 1” appears, hinting that we’re ready to revisit the Seattle tale, this time focusing on Abby’s point of view.

Mazin expressed his desire for viewers to grasp thematically at the close of the season as follows: “By the end, they won’t be in the same place, but they also won’t have reached their destination.

There’s often a narrative that portrays both the positive and negative aspects of love, yet we tend to flip-flop on what constitutes goodness and badness.

According to Mazin, the narrative for Ellie and Abby presents them as grappling with ethical dilemmas. Now, Ellie finds herself dealing with the repercussions of her past actions.

Mazin expressed that while we can’t predict their final destination, he hopes the audience perceives that their journey isn’t over yet. They might still be on a path of growth, or perhaps facing further downfalls. Time will tell which it will be.
