Kaitlyn Dever’s Heartbreaking Revelation: How Andrew Garfield Helped Her Through Grief
As a lifestyle aficionado, I can’t help but admire the unique trajectory of Kaitlyn Dever’s acting journey. From portraying a less-than-ideal teacher to shining in the intellectually stimulating comedy “Booksmart,” and taking on the heart-wrenching role in the TV series “Dopesick,” her career path has been far from traditional, showcasing her versatility and talent.
However, the style of art seemed to reflect the more progressive course of life as the actress took on a leading part in the second season of the post-apocalyptic series, The Last of Us.
28-year-old Dever portrays Abby Anderson, a resolute soldier seeking vengeance for her father’s brutal murder, in the acclaimed HBO series featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay.
In the widely watched HBO show alongside Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, 28-year-old Dever plays Abby Anderson, a soldier who is hell-bent on avenging her father’s gruesome demise.
As I watched Abby share a scene with Joel, played by Pascal, I couldn’t help but be transported back to a heart-wrenching moment from my past. You see, it wasn’t long ago that I stumbled upon the lifeless body of my father, a tragic result of his decision to take his own life with a gunshot to the head.
Three days after purchasing her actual mother Kathy (who passed away at 53 due to a 14-year fight against metastatic breast cancer), Dever acknowledges that she spoke those lines.

She shared with the most recent edition of GQ Hype: “I had recently undergone that ordeal. Although death is an inherent aspect of the human journey, it’s not natural for us to easily adapt to grief and witnessing the demise of our closest companion.
In other words, it seemed odd to keep repeating that particular phrase since I had recently encountered her. Unfortunately, she was no longer among the living, as I had witnessed her lifeless body at the hospital.
‘And that experience is gut-wrenching. Nothing will ever be as bad as that.’
In an Instagram post shared in February 2024, skater Dever confirmed the passing of her mother, who was once a professional ice skating coach.
Since then, she has made efforts to come to terms with the loss, and acknowledges that she wishes more individuals understood the appropriate way to console and communicate with those going through grief.
She mentioned that those who have experienced a loss often appreciate when others inquire about the person they’ve lost. They genuinely welcome questions on the subject.
Talking about her and sharing stories about her helps keep her memory alive, making it seem as if she’s still among us, preserving her spirit and essence.
I understand that by discussing my experience, I could potentially provide helpful insights for others facing similar situations.

For over a decade, starting from the late 2010s, Dever witnessed her mother courageously fight breast cancer until her passing in the year 2024. During these challenging times, she acknowledges that Andrew Garfield, her fellow actor, provided a significant source of strength and support.
Earlier, during a heartfelt live chat with Stephen Colbert, Garfield shared about the loss of his own mother.
The actor became emotional when discussing his mother Lynne Garfield’s passing from pancreatic cancer in 2019. He confessed that while he regrets the grief, he also cherishes it as an unspoken representation of the affection he could not express to her before she passed away.
Reflecting on the power of his words, Dever reminisced: ‘I’d frequently search for it online and rewatch it, as I always felt like… the most devastating thing in my life was the potential loss of my dearest friend. I often thought I wouldn’t be able to carry on.’
‘But then I’d look at Andrew and think, well, his life seems to be moving forwards.’
Ice skating instructor Kathy was additionally left behind by her spouse, Tim Dever (notably known for his role as Barney the Dinosaur between 2000 and 2002), as well as their two younger daughters, Mady and Jane.

Dever expressed her gratitude shortly after your passing, saying, ‘Thank you for fighting tirelessly for us over such a long period.’ She added, ‘I am eternally grateful for the precious moments we shared with you, dear mother. Those moments will always fall short of what they mean to me.’
I can’t imagine life continuing without you, as I am at a loss of how to move forward. You were an exceptional mother and wife, beyond compare.
The thought of living without you is unbearable; I struggle to see a way forward. You were the best mother and wife anyone could ever hope for.
I appreciate the fact that you brought Mady, Jane, and my father into my life. Regardless of what happens, we can always rely on each other due to your actions.
Dever often likened her late mother to pure sunshine, for she brought warmth during my darkest moments and managed to make me smile even in times of sorrow.
My mom is my world, my life, and everything that matters to me. I am at a loss for words because no expression can fully capture the priceless gifts she has bestowed upon me throughout my life, the boundless happiness she brought, or the immeasurable, unconditional love she has shown not just to me but to our entire family.
She mentioned that your love could be found in numerous places. It was present during our mornings shared over coffee, browsing through The RealReal together. It was there as we lounged by the pool enjoying watermelon (and don’t forget the salt!), while listening to Willie Nelson’s music.
You were there in your bed, watching Seinfeld together while I listened to the hilarious lines you effortlessly remembered by heart, echoing your contagious laughter.
It was a friendly banter, sharing stories of my day with you felt great, and seeking your wise counsel is something others can only dream of having.
‘It was going places with you, because no matter where we were, we were having fun and laughing.’
