Tom Cruise’s Sci-Fi Gem Returns to Hulu: Will Fans Finally Get the Sequel They Deserve?
2014 saw Tom Cruise sharing the screen with Emily Blunt in a highly-acclaimed sci-fi action film that underperformed commercially despite garnering a 91% positive review from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie, however, enjoys an impressive 90% approval rating from its audience on the same platform, based on over 100,000 reviews. Despite earning $370 million at the box office, it fell short of expectations given its production budget of $178 million.
Starting June 1, the Hulu streaming service will feature Tom Cruise’s movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” which shares similarities with the film “Groundhog Day.” In this movie, Tom Cruise portrays Major William Cage who finds himself in a time loop, where he battles aliens and is forced to live the same day over and over again each time he dies. This is based on the Japanese light novel “All You Need Is Kill.
In a twist of events, the PR officer named Cruise’s Cage finds himself in a time loop where he must fight against alien intruders, taking on the role of war hero Sergeant Rita Vrataski. The late Brendan Gleeson, known for his roles in Twister and Joker: Folie à Deux, stars alongside him in this action-packed tale.
Fans Have Wanted a Sequel for Over a Decade
Ever since the movie’s premiere, fans have eagerly anticipated a follow-up. A concept for such a sequel was conceived back in 2015. Director Doug Liman expressed interest in a potential sequel in 2016, but due to scheduling conflicts and financial complications, the project has been stuck in a holding pattern during its development.
For fans eagerly awaiting a sequel, there was a glimmer of hope last year when it was announced that Warner Bros. might be working on new content and franchise films. Notably, Warner Bros. is the studio behind the film “Edge of Tomorrow.” Cruise has hinted that he could return for “Edge of Tomorrow 2.”
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the initial movie, he spoke about his fresh collaboration with Warner Bros., hinting at some exciting upcoming films and expressing gratitude towards fans for their unwavering support of Edge of Tomorrow. “To all who have cherished this film throughout the years, thank you for your fandom. And a big thank you to Warner Bros. for producing this film,” Cruise expressed, adding that he was eager to disclose more details about the wonderful movies they were developing.

The Director’s Update in 2024
There’s still a chance we might see a sequel in July 2024,” Liman mentioned. “We continue to discuss it,” he added. “We’re really fond of that universe.” He expressed his readiness to delve back into the film, years after the initial release. “I’m not sure how long James Cameron took with his Terminators, but at the moment, it seemed like quite a while,” he said.
Tom Cruise Frequently Collaborates with the Edge of Tomorrow Crew
Tom Cruise has reconnected with Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote Edge of Tomorrow. McQuarrie and Cruise have previously collaborated on several Mission: Impossible films, including the one now showing in theaters, as well as Cruise’s upcoming Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, set for release in 2022.
Moreover, there’s a new supernatural thriller titled “Deeper“. This film will team up Tom Cruise with Ana de Armas and portray an astronaut encountering a terrifying entity while exploring a mysterious trench deep underwater. Previously, Liman and Cruise collaborated on the 2017 action comedy “American Made“. As of now, no studio has been linked to “Deeper“, and no release date has been set.
Edge of Tomorrow debuts on Hulu on June 1.
