Glenn Howerton’s New Role Reveals the Dark Truth About Dennis from Always Sunny
Glenn Howerton gained significant recognition for his portrayal of Dennis Reynolds since 2005 on the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The new season 17 of this popular series will premiere on July 9, with all main actors anticipated to reprise their roles. Among them is Howerton, who continues to be a key figure within the franchise and a familiar face, even making a guest appearance on Abbott Elementary in January. However, Howerton’s involvement with It’s Always Sunny extends beyond acting, as he is also involved in producing, writing, directing, and co-creating the series.
Despite the fact that Howerton has achieved significant success with It’s Always Sunny, he hasn’t let that limit him to only acting in other shows and films. He’s appeared in A.P. Bio, The Fugitive, and Velma on television, and it seems he’s becoming more open to taking on diverse roles. Interestingly, he often portrays a character similar to his character Dennis in each production, offering a glimpse into Dennis Reynolds’ nature. His recent role in a critically acclaimed Netflix show underscores just how ruthless Dennis Reynolds can be when pursuing his objectives.
Glenn Howerton’s Sirens Character Is Ridiculous, But It’s Almost Impossible To Be Worse Than IASIP’s Dennis
Dennis Is Completely Unique
In his latest acting gig, Ethan Corbin III from Sirens takes on the role of Howerton, but it’s not his most prominent one. Despite being present throughout the series and having a steady presence in the storyline, Ethan is far from being the main star. The primary cast members of Sirens consist of Meghann Fahy as Devon DeWitt, Milly Alcock as Simone DeWitt, Julianne Moore as Michaela Kell, and Kevin Bacon as Peter Kell. Although Howerton’s role is less prominent overall, he plays a pivotal part in the final episode of season 1.
It remains uncertain whether the series will secure another season, but it has garnered significant acclaim from critics. As of now, the show boasts an admirable 73% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with top reviewers even awarding it a noteworthy 83%. Critics have particularly lauded the series for its witty humor, powerful acting, and intriguing dark narrative. Although audiences have been somewhat reserved in their praise, they still express positive sentiments, as the Audience Score is at 66%.
In simpler terms, Corbin Howerton’s character in the show may not have garnered as much attention as one might expect, given his secondary role in the story. While he portrays a ludicrous character with a trust fund, yacht, and lack of understanding for ordinary life, he pales in comparison to the absurdity of Dennis. Regardless of his immense wealth, Ethan’s immorality does not come close to matching Dennis’ insatiable thirst for both attention and power. Despite Ethan’s arrogance, nothing quite matches Dennis’ obsession with these two things.
Indeed, I must admit that the character Ethan in “Sirens” can be quite manipulative towards Milly Alcock’s Simone. However, such behavior pales in comparison to the reprehensible actions of Dennis from “It’s Always Sunny.” Despite his seemingly charming exterior, Dennis consistently exerts control over women, trapping them in dependency to maintain their allegiance for eternity. His psychopathic tendencies have led him to threaten murder and accumulate numerous warrants for sexual misconduct. Truly, the depth of Dennis’ deplorable actions surpasses any manipulation we may encounter in “Sirens.
Sirens’ Ethan Is Still A Big Change From Glenn Howerton’s Typical Roles
Howerton Usually Prefers Very Different Self-Involved Jerks
Ethan may not be morally righteous, but he falls short of being as villainous as Dennis. His character doesn’t align with the stereotypes seen in Howerton’s other leading roles. Instead, Ethan is a wealthy and thoughtless individual who frequently involves himself in fleeting romantic relationships with young women during summer, only to leave them high and dry without much concern. This makes him self-absorbed, arrogant, and impulsive, but his behavior is less extreme compared to what’s typically portrayed by Howerton.
In the television series A.P. Bio, Howerton portrayed Dr. Jack Griffin, a haughty and self-centered Harvard professor of philosophy, who was compelled to teach biology at a nearby school. The absurdity of this predicament provided ample humor throughout the show, as viewers watched Howerton struggle with students who lacked a profound understanding of his deep-rooted passion for academics and philosophy. Interestingly, Ethan’s character, although not inherently malicious, was distinct due to his unique qualities.
In a fresh departure for the actor, Ethan embodies a unique brand of self-centered character, setting him apart from Howerton’s past roles. This shift adds depth to the narrative and intrigue to the conclusion of the series Sirens. Predicting Ethan’s actions is challenging due to Howerton’s penchant for pushing characters to their absurd limits. Essentially, Ethan portrays a typical real-life antagonist, whereas Dennis is an unparalleled villain. The unique humor of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is further underscored by Howerton’s new role.
