NetherRealm confirms no more Mortal Kombat 1 DLC – What’s next?
It has been confirmed by NetherRealm Studios (NRS) that further Downloadable Content (DLC) will not be released for Mortal Kombat 1. Now, the question is: What’s coming up next?
Approximately two years after Mortal Kombat 1’s debut, NetherRealm Studios has announced that no further DLC will be released for the game. This news has left fans disappointed, as they were led to believe that the game would continue to receive support for several years, a promise made by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and other team members.
Unfortunately, similar to Mortal Kombat 11 from 2019, the new game launched with only two Kombat Packs, offering a total of 12 characters and 6 Kameos. With NetherRealm Studios already working on what’s coming next, it leaves us pondering: What lies ahead?
The end of Mortal Kombat 1
On May 23rd, the anticipated, yet apprehensively received social media post emerged, following the launch of Mortal Kombat 1’s “Definitive Edition”. It became clear that this development might mean no further DLC for the game, a suspicion later validated by an official studio announcement on X.
We’re listening to the calls from gamers asking for ongoing assistance with Mortal Kombat 1. While we plan to keep making balance changes and fixing issues, there won’t be any more downloadable character add-ons or new story segments added in the future.
NetherRealm Studios confirms the end of MK1 DLC
Fervent enthusiasts of Mortal Kombat, regardless of their opinion towards the game, found the recent announcement met with mixed reactions. Yet, there were some who appreciated the developers acknowledging the feedback, even if they did not announce any new characters or content in development.
Although Mortal Kombat 1 achieved strong sales figures, most fans attribute this decision to Warner Bros., not NetherRealm Studios. A subsequent announcement clarified that NetherRealm was shifting their focus towards a new project.
This has become a subject for speculation, with fans wondering what NRS’s next game will be.
Is NetherRealm working on Mortal Kombat 2/13 or Injustice 3?
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but ponder about the future of NetherRealm Studios (NRS) and the Mortal Kombat franchise now that the DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 seems to be off the table. It’s intriguing to consider the thoughts of renowned fighting game creator Maximilian Dood, who suggests that the Mortal Kombat series might benefit from a well-deserved rest.
He mentioned that these developers should take some time off, specifically away from working on Mortal Kombat (MK). This break will give them a chance to reconsider their approach and explore new ideas, which will enable them to grow and return with a fresh perspective when they begin work on the next Mortal Kombat game.
Although neither NetherRealm Studios nor Warner Bros. have officially announced their next project, signs suggest it might be Injustice 3. Just a day before confirming that Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC has been finalized, the Warner Bros. Games UK & Ireland X account started sharing content related to Injustice 2.
It’s possible that NetherRealm’s other major series might be due for a new installment soon, given it’s been eight years since Injustice 2. With this summer’s Superman movie serving as potential inspiration, it seems like a natural progression.
It appears quite probable that the Mortal Kombat series may take a break, as we can only confirm this when NetherRealm reveals more information.
