Gandalf’s Secret: How He Wields His Ring of Power in The Lord of the Rings
Gandalf is among the most significant characters in “The Lord of the Rings,” often warning others about the perils of the Rings of Power. However, some viewers might find it surprising that this wizard owns a Ring of Power himself. In the “The Lord of the Rings” series, Gandalf serves as a helpful mentor to the main characters and his unwavering ethics and gentle nature make him a reassuring figure in Middle-earth. Thus, when he advises against tampering with Rings of Power, it’s hard not to trust his words.
In the stories by J.R.R. Tolkien, Círdan bestowed upon Gandalf the ring known as Narya or the Ring of Fire. However, this ring is not extensively explored in the movies “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”, making it somewhat obscure. The upcoming series “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” has hinted at the creation of Narya, but as the storyline doesn’t yet feature Gandalf, we don’t see him wearing it. In Tolkien’s works, there are some details about Narya, but its mysteries remain largely unexplored, leaving many questions about Gandalf’s source of power.
Why Gandalf Doesn’t Directly Use His Ring Of Power In The Lord Of The Rings
Gandalf’s Narya Ring Is Not Really A Weapon
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” Gandalf refrains from utilizing his Ring of Power for several reasons. The primary motive is to prevent himself from succumbing to corruption, as he recognized the danger power could pose. Thus, Gandalf chose not to employ his Ring of Power in “The Lord of the Rings” to avoid attracting Sauron’s and other dark forces’ attention. Additionally, Gandalf abstained from using his Ring because of Narya’s inherent properties.
Crafted solely by Celebrimbor, the three Elven Rings of Power stood out from the rest due to their distinctive traits. Unlike the other rings, their role was not to rule or control, but rather to preserve and defend. Crucially, Sauron (in his guise as Annatar) had no hand in their forging, ensuring they remained untainted during the events of “The Lord of the Rings.” Although Tolkien left some ambiguity about their exact powers, it was the specific purpose of Narya to ignite courage, which explains why Gandalf couldn’t wield it as a weapon directly. Yet, as the Ring of Fire, Narya seemed to amplify Gandalf’s fire-based abilities in extraordinary ways.
When Gandalf May Have Used Narya’s Power In The Lord Of The Rings
Narya Allows Gandalf To Inspire Others & Remain Strong
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” while Gandalf never openly utilizes his Ring of Power, scenes abound where he could have employed the powers of his Ring, Narya. In “The Silmarillion,” when Círdan bestows Gandalf with the ring, he mentions that it will “strengthen and protect you from fatigue.” Given Gandalf’s remarkable resilience during his travels, this power seems to be constantly active, but it is especially noticeable in the wizard’s unwavering determination and imposing presence when confronting evil forces. However, there is another significant ability of Narya that was probably used frequently.
He said, ‘Put on this ring now; your tasks and worries will be many and burdensome, but it will sustain you and shield you from exhaustion. This is the Ring of Fire, and with it, perhaps you can reignite spirits to the courage of past times in a world that’s growing cold.
In the Siege of Gondor and at Helm’s Deep during “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” Gandalf’s presence serves to ignite courage in the despairing soldiers. This is demonstrated when Denethor loses hope, and even more so when the Rohirrim are inspired to fight upon Gandalf’s arrival at dawn. The vivid use of color symbolizes Gandalf as a beacon of light amidst a gloomy landscape, yet it could also hint at the Ring’s influence in action.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the enigmatic symbolism of Narya, the Ring of Fire in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic saga, The Lord of the Rings, is intriguingly highlighted during Gandalf’s battle with the Balrog. During this climactic confrontation, Gandalf proclaims that he bears the “flame of Anor,” a call for light against the encroaching darkness. But could this be a cryptic reference to Narya?
Given that Narya is a Ring of Fire, it’s not unreasonable to speculate that Gandalf might have been wielding its power without explicitly acknowledging his possession of the ring. However, it’s doubtful that he would reveal his ownership during the storyline.
Throughout The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf’s fiery abilities and inspiring presence are generally attributed to his wisdom and magic. Yet, considering Narya’s unique properties, it’s plausible that this Ring of Power may have subtly amplified his prowess all along in the story.
