Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 Transforms Controversial Plot into a Fan Favorite!
Evolution has managed to resolve its most contentious plot points. Previously serving in military intelligence, Tyler was instrumental in the BAU discovering Sicarius’ network of serial killers. However, his work as a consultant with the profilers led to an unexpected romance with Penelope Garcia. This season, Tyler transitions from a recurring character into one of the main characters in Criminal Minds: Evolution’s third season. Due to Tyler lying to her in season 1, Garcia felt betrayed, which was a significant plot point throughout season 2, leaving room for their romantic development.
In the third season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” there’s been a shift from the Garcia love triangle, which has given Luke Alvez and Tyler a chance to grow their friendship. The episode titled “Time to Say Goodbye” really showcased the potential for a dynamic duo between Luke and Tyler. I never thought it would happen, but this season is turning the most annoying pairing on the show into one of my favorites.
Luke Alvez And Tyler Green Are A Surprising Pair Offering Comic Relief In Criminal Minds Evolution Season 3, Episode 3
Luke Promises To Educate Tyler On The Genius Of Bruce Springsteen
The heartbreaking episode of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” in season 3, episode 2, where Will LaMontagne’s funeral was held after his unexpected demise, will forever stand out as a poignant moment. Despite the somber tone, a delightful burst of humor was brought by characters Luke Alvez and Tyler Green during an early scene. As they were on their way to meet Elias Voit’s lone survivor, we join them in the midst of a light-hearted argument. In this case, Luke found it hard to believe that Tyler didn’t appreciate Bruce Springsteen, but he was eager to share his passion for The Boss’s music with Tyler.
The interaction between Luke and Tyler seems to flow effortlessly, reflecting the strong bond they’ve been establishing this season. If it weren’t for moments like Luke jokingly mocking Tyler over his ineffective toy gun as a trainee, the Springsteen scene might have felt forced or out of place. However, Garcia’s interruption doesn’t disrupt their playful banter. This suggests that Luke and Tyler are developing a relationship beyond their association with Garcia, which is crucial for Criminal Minds: Evolution to avoid rehashing familiar will-they-or-won’t-they dynamics.
Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 Is Able To Move On From Garcia’s Divisive Love Triangle Conflict
Luke Alvez & Tyler Green Build A Friendship Outside Of Their Pasts With Garcia
During the original 15-season run of Criminal Minds, Luke had a playful, flirtatious dynamic with Penelope Garcia. In the finale, he proposed a date to her, but their relationship didn’t progress romantically. Thankfully, in the first episode of season 1 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, it was made clear that their playful banter wasn’t indicative of real romantic feelings; they only went on one date together. Their relationship resembled more Garcia’s unique friendship with Derek Morgan rather than a romantic connection.
In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, I must say that the love triangle between Garcia, Tyler Green, and Luke in Evolution season 1 was a bit divisive and unsatisfying. However, it seems like the creators of Criminal Minds are wisely moving away from this love triangle in season 3. Instead, they’re delving deeper into Tyler’s character as he becomes an official member of the BAU, allowing him to integrate more fully into the team dynamics. This shift is also bringing about a transformation in his relationship with Luke, taking it beyond romantic rivalry and opening up new possibilities for both characters.
Main Cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution | |||
---|---|---|---|

Paget Brewster | Emily Prentiss | 2-18 | Single. |

Kirsten Vangsness | Penelope Garcia | 1-18 | Single. Previously had a one-night stand with Tyler Green. Had one failed dated with Luke Alvez. |
Aisha Tyler | Dr. Tara Lewis | 11-18 | In a committed relationship with Rebecca Wilson. |

Ryan-James Hatanaka | Tyler Green | 16-18 | Single. Had illicit chemistry with Garcia in Evolution season 1, but Prentiss ordered Garcia to end it. |
Zach Gilford | Elias Voit | 16-18 | Voit was married to Sydney, sharing two children, but Voit’s amnesia means he can’t remember. His family is in witness protection and refuses to see him. |
The gap of six months between seasons 2 and 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution provided a smooth refresh in team dynamics. The evolving camaraderie between Luke and Tyler is an exciting change, as it moves the storyline away from Garcia’s romantic turmoil. Instead, the show is offering each character an opportunity to develop individually, which enhances the strong ensemble feel that has always been a core aspect of Criminal Minds.
Criminal Minds: Evolution Needs A Brand New Friendship Rather Than A Fresh Romance
Shortened Paramount+ Seasons Leaves No Room For Filler
In the upcoming episodes of BAU, both Luke and Tyler, as newcomers, require more exploration beyond their romantic connections. Luke, who joined the original series towards its end, is yet to fully establish his long-term persona. On the other hand, Tyler, a fresh character from Criminal Minds: Evolution, initially appeared as an outsider and romantic interest. Now that he’s officially a team member, it’s crucial for the show to delve into who Tyler is within the group dynamic. By moving away from love triangles and focusing on friendships and shared professional experiences, the show can significantly develop the characters in a significant and engaging manner.
In their latest role in the Behavioral Analysis Unit, Alvez and Green typically operate independently. However, there are instances where they can team up for investigative tasks. Their characters offer a unique blend of complementarity and contrast – Luke’s composure and stability versus Tyler’s sharpness and intensity.
It’d be great if Bruce Springsteen were depicted as a continuous runner throughout the evolving season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution.” This recurring theme would subtly emphasize that the bonds within the BAU are equally important as Elias Voit, adding depth to the narrative. These softer, character-centric moments serve to intensify the impact of the dark crime investigations by tying the drama to relatable human relationships.
