Mission: Impossible’s Shocking Future: Who Will Lead the IMF After Ethan Hunt?
The just-released film, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” has lived up to its longstanding promises and provided a fitting closure for the series. The ending might not have been predictable, but it brings Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) journey to a significant end, leaving room for future possibilities. Despite some casualties along the way, there are enough survivors at the end to envision what the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) could become in the future.
Although Luther perishes in “The Final Reckoning”, the vast majority of Hunt’s initial Impossible Mission Force (IMF) team members are still alive at the end of the film. With Ethan being pursued by his own government due to his possession of the Entity, and many of his associates under investigation as accomplices, this conclusion neatly wraps up the “Mission: Impossible” series. This decisive ending helps quell speculation about Tom Cruise’s future appearances, ensuring a conclusive end without killing off Ethan.
Which Members Of The IMF Survive Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Most Of Ethan’s Friends Make It Through The Final Movie
Fortunately, Luther is the sole main character from the IMF who perishes during “The Final Reckoning”. Ethan, Grace (played by Haley Atwell), and Benji all make it through the movie’s events, aiding Ethan in trapping the entity within Luther’s prism and keeping the deadly AI under wraps. Despite their survival, the US government may not easily forgive their actions; given that they aided Hunt on his mission, President Sloane (Angela Bassett) might use them as leverage to reach Hunt in the future.
In my opinion, it appears that if Mission: Impossible were to continue in the future, it would likely be with the remaining IMF agents battling to clear their names and evade punishment for aiding Ethan Hunt. Fortunately, The Final Reckoning introduced several fresh characters who survived the film’s events and could potentially reappear in subsequent sequels or spin-offs. Among these newcomers, William Donloe, the CIA agent whose career was sabotaged by Ethan when he stole the NOC list in 1996, seems the most probable to resurface.
In “The Final Reckoning”, some characters like Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt, who are still alive, were absent from the film. This suggests that the Mission: Impossible series may continue beyond this installment, contrary to previous claims that Ethan Hunt’s story in “The Final Reckoning” would be his last adventure. The movie left room for potential comebacks, as several crucial characters narrowly escaped death (for example, Benji survived those intense final scenes).
Who Is The Leader Of The IMF Team After The Final Reckoning?
Benji Finally Accepted His Inevitable Responsibility
In the course of the Mission: Impossible series, Ethan Hunt has consistently been the silent commander of his specific IMF unit. Yet, with the hero currently in concealment and safeguarding a perilous artifact, it’s no longer advisable for him to guide the active agents into the coming era. Instead, this task seems destined to be handed over to another individual – most likely Benji. Not only has Simon Pegg’s character endured the longest (as Luther is deceased), but The Final Reckoning emphasizes Benji’s role as the new commander.
As a die-hard movie buff, I must say that in “The Final Reckoning,” Benji initially shies away from taking the helm, but his transformation is remarkable. In Hunt’s absence, he gradually gains confidence as a leader. When we embark on our perilous journey to the Arctic research station to uncover the hidden coordinates, Hunt entrusts Benji with the mission command, and he delivers without fail. This success should boost his self-assurance enough for him to fill Ethan’s shoes now that he’s hung up his action hero mantle. However, even if Benji isn’t quite ready, he’s got trusted allies like Grace and Degas to share the burden with.
Where Does The IMF Go From Here?
The Remaining IMF Agents Still Have Plenty Of Responsibilities
Despite wrapping up Ethan’s tale effectively in the sequel, there’s room for further Mission: Impossible adventures involving the current IMF team. It won’t be easy for Benji, Grace, and Degas to shake off their rogue agent label after The Final Reckoning’s events, but given that they saved the world from total annihilation, it seems logical for the IMF to reconsider their inclusion in future missions.
It’s great news that we’ll never run out of intriguing plots for the Mission: Impossible series to tackle. Each new installment has delved into a distinct peril to global peace, and there are countless exciting ideas left to be discovered. From additional nuclear risks and hidden terrorist organizations to innovative threats like artificial intelligence acting maliciously, it’s clear that Benji, Grace, and Degas will face life-threatening situations once more in the future.
Could The IMF Carry A Mission: Impossible Movie Without Ethan Hunt?
Tom Cruise Has Been The Star Of This Franchise For So Long
Fundamentally, the main hurdle a potential Mission: Impossible spinoff would face is the lack of Cruise’s character, who has always been the core essence of this film series. From Brian de Palma’s 1996 original, the franchise has relied heavily on Cruise’s captivating charm and his readiness to take risks for our entertainment. The death-defying stunts in Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movies have been a significant selling point, making it difficult to envision future projects matching their success without this major attraction. However, this doesn’t mean the franchise is destined to fail; it simply presents a challenge.
More recently, the sequels have skillfully shone the limelight on secondary characters, such as Benji and Grace, allowing them to spearhead significant scenes. This was clearly demonstrated in the climactic scene of The Final Reckoning, where Hunt was conspicuously missing from one of the film’s most thrilling moments – the confinement of the Entity within the bunker. This suggests that the Mission: Impossible series transcends Cruise, but any forthcoming spin-offs will encounter significant pressure to convince viewers to accept his absence.
