Tubi has announced that “Phone Booth” will be one of the many new movies added to their service in time for summer. The 2002 film is set to debut on the free streaming platform starting June 1st. This is exciting news for fans, as the movie is not currently available on most major streaming platforms, but can be rented or bought from Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube.

In the bustling cityscape of New York City, the film Phone Booth unfolds. The story revolves around Stuart Shepard (Farrell), a self-important publicist who contemplates betraying his wife, Kelly (Radha Mitchell), by having an affair with his client, Pamela McFadden (Katie Holmes). However, a twist of fate ensues when Stuart tries to contact Pamela from a phone booth in Times Square to avoid detection. Instead, he receives an ominous call from an unknown man (Sutherland) who seems to know about his infidelity and threatens to reveal it to Kelly.

Initially, Stuart dismisses the caller’s threats, but soon realizes the caller is a trained sniper who has issued similar warnings to others in the past. The situation becomes increasingly tense as Stuart finds himself trapped in the phone booth, with two options: admit his unfaithfulness to Kelly or face potential death in broad daylight. This sets up a thrilling, high-stakes game of cat and mouse between Stuart and the caller.

Phone Booth Became a Cult Classic

Despite being postponed due to the Washington, D.C. sniper incidents in 2002, the film “Phone Booth” eventually gained cult status. Critics appreciated it (72% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it earned $97.8 million globally on a budget of just $13 million. Following their previous success, this was the second collaboration between the late Schumacher and Farrell in two years, their other being a war drama. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, “Phone Booth” also features Forest Whitaker, an Academy Award winner, as a police officer.

Over the years, numerous movies have been compared to the film “Phone Booth“, with the standout being the 2024 action thriller on Netflix titled “ Carry-On “. This movie features Taron Egerton, known for his role in the “Kingsman” franchise, as a TSA agent. In this film, he receives a call from a merciless mercenary who demands him to pass a suspicious case through a scanner or face the potential murder of his pregnant wife. The highly praised “ Carry-On ” became one of Netflix’s top five most-watched films in January of this year.

Recently, Farrell excelled as the Gotham crime boss, Oz Cobb/Penguin in the spinoff series of The Batman, earning a Golden Globe for his performance. His next big-screen appearance will be alongside Margot Robbie from Barbie in Sony’s romantic fantasy film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, set to premiere on Sept 19. On the other hand, Sutherland’s most recent film role was in Clint Eastwood’s 2024 legal thriller, …, and he is linked to upcoming projects like Sierra Madre and Tinsel Town.
