Box Office: Disney’s Lilo & Stitch And Mission: Impossible 8 Team Up To Set Multiple Box Office Records
The powerhouse duo of “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is shattering records during Memorial Day weekend. The first, a live-action adaptation of the 2002 Disney animated film, revolves around Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a child left to her own devices, who forms an unlikely friendship with Stitch (Chris Sanders), a mischievous alien who crash-lands in Hawaii after escaping captivity. The second, being the eighth installment in the “Mission: Impossible” movie series, picks up where 2023’s “Dead Reckoning” ends, with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team persistently working to thwart the rogue AI, The Entity, from causing global devastation.
By this coming Saturday, according to current predictions, the animated movie “Lilo & Stitch” is expected to debut over the long weekend with earnings ranging from $175 million to $180 million at the domestic box office. On the other hand, “Mission: Impossible” is projected to make around $77 million. Regardless of its exact figure, if “Lilo & Stitch” reaches even the lower end of its forecast, it will shatter the record for the highest Memorial Day weekend opening. It has already surpassed the previous record holder, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which earned a total of $160.5 million over four days in 2022 and went on to amass a staggering $1.496 billion globally, another Tom Cruise-led production.
As I sit here on Monday, wrapping up my thoughts about the weekend’s box office, it’s clear that two films are making quite a stir. Firstly, the heartwarming tale of friendship in “Lilo & Stitch” is set to leave its original film’s North American earnings of $145.8 million in the dust by the end of today.
On the other hand, the action-packed “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” has made a splash with an impressive opening day gross of $24.8 million. What’s even more intriguing is that this latest installment appears to be breaking records, aiming to surpass the three-day opening record of its franchise set by “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” at $61 million, with an estimated $63 million in sight. Quite a feat for a series that’s already eight films deep!
The collective power of the movies currently playing in cinemas, such as Final Destination Bloodlines, Thunderbolts*, and Sinners, plus other titles, is estimated to bring in over $322 million at the domestic box office this weekend. This would make it the most profitable Memorial Day weekend ever recorded, surpassing the total earnings of movies like Fast & Furious 6, The Hangover Part III, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Iron Man 3 in 2013, which combined amounted to $314.3 million.
More to come…
