Harry Potter’s Mad-Eye Moody: The Character Who Deserved So Much More!

Despite appearing somewhat simplistic or inconsistent when revisiting the Harry Potter books as an adult, it’s undeniably true that they hold a powerful allure for young readers thanks to their richly detailed mythos and vast array of characters. Each book introduces a plethora of intriguing characters and ideas that contribute significantly to the magical universe. Regrettably, this level of depth often fails to transfer effectively onto the big screen due to the demands and limitations of movie-making. One such character who didn’t receive enough attention in the films is Mad-Eye Moody (portrayed by Brendan Gleeson).

The Harry Potter film series has taken several steps that diminished certain characters’ roles, such as weakening Ginny Weasley’s magical abilities on screen or neglecting to showcase Ron Weasley and Harry Potter’s Quidditch victories. Among these missteps, perhaps the most significant is the underdevelopment of Mad-Eye Moody as a supporting character, given his pivotal role in the novels. He deserved more screentime and a fitting farewell, but unfortunately, the Harry Potter movies have not done justice to this important character. It’s hoped that HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series will give Moody the recognition and narrative importance he deserves.

Mad-Eye Was Too Much Of A Background Character

It’s only natural that a franchise as complex as the Harry Potter series, with numerous characters, may find it challenging to give each character their fair share of focus. However, Mad-Eye Moody stands out as someone who truly deserved more screen time. The Harry Potter books clearly emphasize his importance not just in the battle against Voldemort, but also in Harry’s personal life. Re-watching the movies still leaves a sense of disappointment when you realize that he didn’t receive the recognition he deserved.

Mad-Eye Moody is renowned as one of the bravest and sharpest wizards to join the Order of the Phoenix. Previously, he served for many years as an auror, a position he is famously associated with in the wizarding world. The books don’t fully convey his fame or impact on the wizarding community, nor do they portray the challenges involved in capturing and mimicking him. In fact, Moody was instrumental in apprehending most of Azkaban’s prisoners, and he is also the one who ensures the security of the Order’s headquarters at 12, Grimmauld Place. Regrettably, these details are not emphasized in the movies.

Not Showing Mad-Eye’s Death Was A Missed Opportunity

He Deserved A Proper Send-Off

One significant on-screen character demise in the Harry Potter movies that stands out is Mad-Eye Moody’s. He meets his end during the Seven Potters scene in The Deathly Hallows, where seven individuals consume Polyjuice Potion to mimic Harry Potter and deceive the Death Eaters. Unfortunately, not only does Moody perish during the Battle of the Seven Potters, but his corpse is seized by the Death Eaters, denying his friends the chance to give him a proper burial or hold a funeral for him. This event deeply affected Harry Potter and other characters.

It seems rather hasty and disrespectful to swiftly end the life of Mad-Eye Moody without giving much detail about his demise, especially given his formidable reputation as a powerful, brave, and significant wizard. Providing a depiction of his death would enable us, the viewers, to share in this emotional farewell, just as we did with Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore. It would also serve to illustrate the deadly danger posed by the Death Eaters. Mad-Eye Moody is known for being exceptionally difficult to defeat, so his death would underscore the immense challenge of surviving an assault from Lord Voldemort, regardless of one’s abilities as a wizard.
