Charlie Sheen’s Top Gun Spoof is BACK! You Won’t Believe Where!
In the streamed version of Charlie Sheen’s 1991 spoof, “Hot Shots!”, will also be available the sequel titled “Hot Shots! Part Deux”.
Or: The original 1991 comedy parody by Charlie Sheen, “Hot Shots!”, along with its sequel “Hot Shots! Part Deux”, are set to stream.
Starting June 6th, I’ll have the chance to stream both the hilarious spoofs of Top Gun, Hot Shots! and its sequel Hot Shots! Part Deux, on Hulu. These films, directed and written by Jim Abrahams, primarily make fun of the original 1986 Top Gun movie, as well as other genre films like 9 1/2 Weeks, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Dances with Wolves, Marathon Man, and Rocky. The first Hot Shots! was made on a budget of $26 million and was a critical darling, earning $181.1 million worldwide. It received a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux, was also a box office success with $133.8 million on a $25 million budget, it received somewhat mixed reviews, scoring 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a new take, the story unfolds around Topper Harley (Sheen), a previous naval aviator who’s still grappling with the tragic, comically disastrous plane crash involving his father in the military. Later summoned back to duty by Lt. Commander Block (Kevin Dunn), Harley finds himself once again in uniform. The cast also includes notable performances from Cary Elwes, Valeria Golino, Lloyd Bridges, Jon Cryer, Kristy Swanson, Bill Irwin, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Top Gun’s Actual Sequel Was a Mega Hit
Unlike “Hot Shots!”, which received a sequel shortly after its initial release, the sequel to “Top Gun”, titled “Top Gun: Maverick”, was produced much later, spanning over three decades. The film’s star and action film legend, Tom Cruise, opted against making repeated Top Gun movies. In an interview, Cruise expressed that although they desired him to make Top Gun endlessly, he preferred to explore his talents in various domains and sought more challenges.
In the year 2022, the film “Top Gun: Maverick” became an enormous hit. Tom Cruise once again took on the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, joined by a star-studded cast that included Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. The movie raked in an impressive $1.5 billion globally. At present, details about “Top Gun 3” are scarce, but we can anticipate Cruise, Teller, and Powell to return. As for the release date, it’s still uncertain, with audiences potentially having to wait until 2027 to catch the third installment, as filming is likely to start soon.
Hot Shots! and its 1993 sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux are both coming to Hulu on June 6th.
