In recent times, Director Guy Ritchie has maintained a strong standing with critics, as several of his films have received positive reviews. This consistent success would be envied by many directors, but it seems that his latest release, “Fountain of Youth“, may have caused a minor setback. Despite boasting a talented cast and an intriguing storyline, the movie has fallen short of being the exciting adventure film it could have been, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
The “Fountain of Youth” has received a 37% “poor” rating on a review aggregator site, based on 38 reviews. This is a lower score than some of Guy Ritchie’s more recent films such as “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” (68%), “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” (83%), “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre” (51%), “Wrath of Man” (68%) and “The Gentlemen” (75%). In fact, you would have to go back to 2017’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” (31%) to find a lower score. It is worth noting that Ritchie had an impressive streak until his latest Apple TV+ release.
Under Ritchie’s direction and a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, the movie “Fountain of Youth” revolves around two estranged siblings joining forces to seek the legendary fountain of youth. This film carries an old-school adventure vibe that should appeal to viewers finding it on streaming platforms, but it might not strike critics as something entirely new due to its familiar feel. Many critics label it predictable, while others believe that if this movie had been released in the early ’90s, it would have seemed innovative and original. The star-studded cast, featuring the likes of , Natalie Portman, Carmen Ejogo, Stanley Tucci, and Eiza González, adds depth to the material, although some argue that Krasinski’s portrayal of the arrogant explorer may be misplaced.
Guy Ritchie Wasn’t the First Choice To Helm ‘Fountain of Youth’
Initially, Dexter Fletcher was intended to direct “Fountain of Youth,” but he left the production in early 2024 and Guy Ritchie stepped in as his replacement. The movie took its cast and crew to various locations including Bangkok, Vienna, and Liverpool during filming, making it a worldwide adventure for everyone involved, both on and off-screen. Filming commenced in February 2024 and concluded in October of the same year.
Ritchie has a chance to bounce back from this significant setback as he has some exciting upcoming projects lined up. For instance, he’s working on a film titled “Wife & Dog“, a black comedy feature starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins. Additionally, it was announced that he will direct “Road House 2” with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role, which might help him gain positive reception from critics. Lastly, “Fountain of Youth” is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
