Star Trek: Picard Showrunner Reveals Heartbreaking Sacrifices in Season 3 Casting!
In the third installment of Star Trek: The Next Generation, most of the original cast returned, delighting fans. This season received an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated of the three seasons by a significant margin.
In an interview for The Sackhoff Show, Terry Matalas revealed that taking over as the sole showrunner for Season 3, following his co-showrunning role with Akiva Goldsman in Season 2, meant pursuing a vision to make Season 3 resemble The Next Generation more closely. To achieve this goal, they managed to secure Patrick Stewart’s participation. However, due to budget constraints, it wasn’t feasible for Stewart’s co-stars from the previous seasons to return, necessitating certain compromises or adjustments.
As we wrapped up season 2 of Picard, Akiva asked me, “Alright, what’s next? What do you have in mind?” I eagerly replied, “I want to reunite the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation!” They responded, “If you can persuade Patrick Stewart, we’ll give it some thought.” It was a challenging task because there were so many talented actors in seasons 1 and 2. However, budget constraints meant that not everyone could be included, which was heartbreaking as it was a difficult position to be in.
After the decision was made, it became necessary for Picard to bid farewell to some cast members, namely Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Evan Evagora. However, their departure paved the way for the return of actors like Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Marina Sirtis (Troi), Brent Spiner (Data/Worf), LeVar Burton (Geordi), and Gates McFadden (Crusher). Other well-known ‘Star Trek’ stars who graced our screens in Season 3 included John de Lancie (Q), Daniel Davis (Professor Moriarty), Michael Forbes (Commaner Ro Laren), and Alice Krige (Borg Queen).
Will Patrick Stewart Return as Jean-Luc Picard?
Discussions are taking place about expanding the cast of the series “Picard”, but nothing is set in stone at the moment. Many fans have expressed a desire to see “Star Trek: Legacy” come to life, a new show that continues the stories of legacy characters. Although there was a significant petition signed by several “Star Trek” alumni supporting this idea, “Legacy” has not yet been produced. Additionally, there were plans for a feature film sequel to the third season of “Star Trek: Picard”, but this may have depended on the performance of “Star Trek: Section 31” on Paramount+. Unfortunately, “Section 31” did not perform well when it was launched.
Star Trek: Picard is streaming on Paramount+.
