The most recent live-action Disney movie remake has arrived, and now we’re all eagerly discussing how it compares to the cherished animated original, such as myself. One significant alteration that you may have observed is the absence of a character named Gantu in the 2025 version of Lilo & Stitch. Upon speaking with the filmmakers, TopMob learned the reason behind this change.
In the 2002 film, a character named Experiment 626 escapes to Earth following his exile, with the United Galactic Federation in pursuit to recapture him. Previously known characters Jumba and Pleakley were set to return in this movie, but Captain Gantu was not involved this time around. This is what director Dean Fleischer Camp had to say about the changes:
Gantu was something that didn’t perform quite as expected in live-action format. We gave it a shot, but in the end, we were compelled to make a choice. I am confident about this decision because I believe that by focusing more on the characters and adding emotional depth, particularly between the sisters, we could create space for a more immersive storytelling experience.
In terms of Disney remakes, there’s been quite a range of similarity to the originals, with “The Lion King” being almost identical, while the recent “Snow White” film introduced a fresh set of tunes to its soundtrack. As Camp explained, they considered incorporating Gantu into the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch,” but decided he wasn’t essential and needed to be omitted to accommodate some of the new elements.

In the realm of “Lilo & Stitch,” Gantu, the emissary from the Galactic Federation, steps into action when traditional tactics fail to capture the mischievous alien, Stitch. As a longtime fan of the 2002 animated film, I must admit that his absence was not glaringly missed, but I find myself intrigued about how his inclusion might have elevated the live-action adaptation. Alas, it’s left to our imagination as to how Gantu would have fit into this new version of the story.
In my review of the remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” I awarded it a 3.5 out of 5 stars, acknowledging that certain elements from the original animated film were absent, such as Gantu’s character, but I was captivated by the increased emphasis on its human characters. Specifically, I found myself drawn to the portrayals of Lilo and Nani by Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong, respectively. As our conversation with Camp unfolded during the interview, these performances left a lasting impression on me.
My take on the film is to acknowledge that animation is an entirely unique medium compared to live-action, and simply mimicking it isn’t always effective. Translating it directly through photo-realistic photography may seem tempting, but I believe it strips away a significant amount of expressiveness and the many aspects where animation excels over live-action. There are numerous instances where this is true.
In Lilo & Stitch, there’s a nice mix of reprising classic moments we cherish, alongside fresh, creative adaptations. For instance, you may recall the modifications made to Pleakley’s character, who in the original had a fondness for wigs and dresses, but in this version, he has undergone some changes. (As Camp went on to explain…)
Live-action movies have advantages they can exploit, which animation may not be able to match, and vice versa. We aimed to lean slightly more towards the strengths of a live-action movie while adjusting the script for this film adaptation.
After the closing of each day, there’s nothing quite like revisiting the classic original animated film, but it sure is intriguing to observe what elements endure and what changes occur in Disney’s adaptations. And now, the beloved movie Lilo & Stitch is ready for viewing!
