See The Moment Natalie Portman Hesitated When Asked If She’d Ever ‘Stolen’ Something, Then Spoke Out About Anakin’s Braids From Star Wars

I’m absolutely thrilled about Natalie Portman‘s latest film adventure, “Fountain of Youth,” now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+. In this 2025 release, she teams up with John Krasinski as siblings embarking on a quest to discover the legendary spring. Interestingly enough, when asked if she’s ever “stolen” anything in real life, Portman playfully referred back to her iconic braided hairstyle from “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.

It’s a natural trend for stars to take props from sets as a memento of their hard work. Tom Holland has admitted to stealing big props from Spider-Man sets like Tony Stark’s glasses, and Keanu Reeves kept items from The Matrix and John Wick. As for when Natalie Portman was asked on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert if she’d ever “stolen” anything before, she looked a bit hesitant to answer. But when the question changed to whether she ever took anything from a movie set, she was quick to say a monogrammed lighter from Jackie and an unusual prop from Star Wars:

I picked up one detachable braid similar to Anakin’s from Star Wars. Since it was attached with a clip, they must have made many of them since he needed a new one frequently.

Instead of assuming Natalie Portman was going to confess about stealing one of Padme’s elaborate hairpieces or accessories, that seems quite odd to carry a small Padawan braid around in your bag or pocket. It’s not surprising given the difficulty of leaving the set without a large lightsaber. So perhaps the hair extension served as a memento of her Star Wars spouse before he joined the dark side. Now I wonder if she ever secretly wore it.

Interestingly enough, Natalie Portman revealed that George Lucas was unaware that she kept Anakin’s Padawan braid. If the creator of Star Wars were to ponder about the whereabouts of this treasured item someday, the Academy Award winner had an explanation ready for Stephen Colbert.

I lost it. So, I can’t give it back.

In a distant location, there’s a small clip-on braid drifting about, which was previously worn by Hayden Christensen in his Star Wars days. If the speculation proves correct that Natalie Portman might rejoin Star Wars, then the props team may need to conduct an audit of their Padawan braids.

George Lucas might not have been aware that Natalie Portman wore a Padawan braid, but Hayden Christensen certainly did. There’s no bad blood between them though, as the Canadian actor has shared a heartwarming story about knowing Portman had kept his hair prop and humorously extended his pardon for it. It seems like he might have employed his Jedi mind tricks to discover that secret. You can watch the full interview of Portman on Instagram below:

Natalie Portman was a bit shy when asked if she had ever taken something, but she eagerly discussed a funny past incident where she “stole” one of Anakin’s braids from the Star Wars series, which is quite memorable given her role as Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. You can catch a glimpse of Portman and Hayden Christensen’s clip-on braid in this film with your Disney+ subscription.
