Amanda Owen Reveals Life Lessons from Raising Feral Kids on the Farm

On their farm in the Yorkshire Dales, Amanda Owen shares stories about bringing up her nine wild-spirited kids, and the valuable life lessons they pick up each day.

The 46-year-old shepherdess is a mother to Raven, Reuben, Miles, Edith, Violet, Sidney, Annas, Clementine, and Nancy from her former marriage with Clive.

They reside on a sprawling, 2,000-acre agricultural property that serves as their home and workplace. Their daily lives have been captured and broadcasted on the television shows “Our Yorkshire Farm” and its spinoff, “Our Farm Next Door.

Currently, Amanda has revealed that the liberty her kids experience is a priceless life lesson they’ll carry forward.

She shared with Yorkshire Life magazine: “Living here equips you for any life. It instills resilience, practical wisdom, and a strong work ethic. It shows you that you can adapt to various tasks, that you persist despite challenges, and that sometimes, despite your best efforts, life isn’t always as rewarding as you’d hope.

She noted: “It goes without saying that your priority is to protect your child. However, peril can take various shapes – from vehicles and swift rivers to creatures with teeth and hooves, or even through a simple screen. It’s hard to predict where the danger may arise, but living life overly cautious isn’t the answer, and I wouldn’t advocate for that nor praise it.

Instead of avoiding it altogether, recognizing the potential hazard and learning how to handle it safely is beneficial. This way, you acquire both respect for its power and the skills necessary to operate it effectively. These valuable lessons might even surpass those gained elsewhere.

It comes after Amanda defiantly hit back at critics after a string of cruel swipes about her looks.

In a clip from Wednesday’s episode of ITV’s Lorraine, she made an appearance, offering a sneak peek into her farm lifestyle.

Despite being deeply involved in caring for the animals and tending to the land, Amanda takes pleasure in maintaining her personal grooming, challenging common stereotypes in the process.

‘I like my makeup. I like to try and make an effort and I know that sounds very vain,’ she shared.

The camera adjusted its view to reveal her seated inside a farm vehicle, applying lipstick as she glanced at the mirror.

She added, “However, if someone insists that ‘with mascara like that, you can’t possibly be a shepherd’ – well, too bad, because I am.

‘I take great joy and happiness in what I do, so therefore I keep doing that.’

It isn’t the first time Amanda has spoken out against people claiming she is ‘too glamorous’.

Back in 2021, she addressed the topic on Steph’s Packed Lunch, according to the Mirror .

Host Steph McGovern remarked, “You manage to remain so stylishly elegant throughout everything, which never fails to amaze me.

Amanda replied: ‘Look at my hands though Steph. Honestly, I’ve got iodine up my arm.’

She continued by talking about potential assumptions people might make, and she emphasized: “Indeed, we dislike stereotypes. What I mean is, just as I own a sheepdog, and perhaps you might think of me as a ‘crook,’ it’s important to remember that such assumptions are often misleading.

‘Yes I spend my time running around after sheep, but I can do other things too.’

Lately, Reuben Owen from Our Yorkshire Farm boldly responded to critics who criticized him following the sharing of a ‘disturbing and offensive’ video by his mother, Amanda, with strong counterarguments.

Just recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working side by side with my 21-year-old son, Reuben, here at our Ravenseat Farm nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Swaledale, Yorkshire. We took a moment to capture this special bonding experience on camera and shared it on my Instagram page.

In the video, Amanda, who has nine children, can be heard commenting: “Apparently, this is what you’ve been doing in the lambing areas,” as Reuben is lounging on a ewe and her lamb.

Afterward, he grips the female sheep by its horns and says to his offspring, “Well done! You managed to capture the lamb as well.

Amanda captioned the post: ‘Caught ewe. Reuben downs tools and springs into action.

‘*Everyone lends a hand, there is no one exempt from lambing time tasks*.’

Yet, numerous spectators found themselves perplexed by the post and expressed disapproval since they weren’t aware of exactly what Reuben intended to do with the ewe.

As a conscientious lifestyle advisor, I find myself compelled to address such behavior. It’s important to remember kindness and respect towards all creatures, including sheep, is non-negotiable. I feel disheartened when I witness actions that are not only inhumane but also contrary to the compassionate values I strive to uphold.

It was quite unsettling to see how you handled the sheep. We value animals and their welfare, so they should never be treated carelessly.

During an interview with The Telegraph, Reuben addressed the uproar on social media by stating: “I simply don’t spend my time or energy browsing through social media platforms.

The young farmer added: ‘If you do ever see me on my phone, I’ll be searching for machinery sales.’

A few came to her defense, writing: “Disregard remarks from animal activists… If everyone followed their advice, nothing would progress, and we’d all be famished at this point. Keep farming.

Another said: ‘Kindness is a gift, if you cannot say anything nice please say nothing at all.
