Motherland and Taskmaster stars team up for new “clever and chaotic” BBC sit-com

Motherland star Diane Morgan and Taskmaster‘s Sarah Kendall are set to team up on a new BBC sitcom.

In the ongoing production, tentatively named “Ann Droid“, we find Morgan assuming the role of a robot designed to look human, whose duties include providing companionship for the elderly and assessing their requirements.

Morgan, known for her role in “Cunk on Britain“, is teaming up with Kendall to pen a six-part series. They worked together before, back in 2017, when they both featured in an episode of “Motherland“.

In the year 2029, Sue has been facing tough times. Eighteen months prior, she lost her husband David, and now her only son Michael is preparing to leave once more, this time in an attempt to save his own marriage for a second time. However, there’s some positive news on the horizon: Michael has arranged a unique surprise for Sue to help her live more independently. This care provider will be unlike any other.

The newly developed D500 social humanoid eldercare robot is designed to alleviate loneliness and monitor health among the aging population, thus easing strain on the continuously taxed NHS. However, it has become Sue’s greatest dread – a too-attentive, socially awkward nuisance.

However, it doesn’t take long for her to realize that she can exploit the droid to settle scores and accomplish tasks her son often neglects. An unusual friendship blossoms between this elderly woman and her not-so-socially-skilled but technologically-adept robot, resulting in a humorous series of events.

In her declaration, Morgan expressed her excitement as the BBC approved the production of the show, adding a humorous remark that the series would explore the potential impact on one’s mother of the technology it portrays.

Shane Allen, the executive producer from Boffola Pictures, commented: “As artificial intelligence makes its way into the creative sector, our response is to poke fun at it. Now, it’s your turn, Chat GPT.

Jon Petrie, the BBC’s Comedy Director, stated: “Diane Morgan’s brilliant comedic talent is evident in Ann Droid, a collaborative work with Sarah Kendall. In this production, she masterfully creates an unusual bond between a spirited elderly woman and her overly attentive robot. The series, which blends intelligence and chaos, offers six episodes that harmoniously balance heartfelt moments with mischief.

Ann Droid (w/t) has no release date.
