The 1970s version of “The Incredible Hulk” series provided some of the funniest and strangely bizarre scenes in Marvel cinematic history, with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno leading the way. The show had a plethora of absurd, unintentionally humorous Hulk moments, despite its emotional depth. It often ventured into areas that were anything but serious, offering a glimpse into just how peculiar and daring (or perhaps confused) network superhero TV could be during that time.
During the era when superheroes predominantly appeared in cartoons and failed television pilots, The Incredible Hulk stood out as a remarkable success on TV. The series primarily focused on the character David Banner (rather than Bruce), delving into serious topics. Despite being constrained by a tight budget, 70s aesthetics, and a requirement to adapt the format, these limitations inadvertently led to scenes that were comical due to their illogical or incoherent nature. Ferrigno’s growling green giant was intended to inspire fear, but numerous scenes have endured as peculiar oddities too bizarre to be forgotten.
10. Hulk Fights A Bear
The Incredible Hulk: Death In The Family
In one of the most memorable scenes from “The Incredible Hulk,” during the second TV movie, Banner transforms in the woods and engages in a struggle with a grizzly bear in a lake. At first, it appears that a real animal is indeed fighting someone portraying the Hulk. This scene might seem quite startling by today’s ethical and safety standards regarding animals. However, the ending swiftly alleviates such worries as the bear is suddenly swapped out for an incredibly fake, limp stuffed toy that the Hulk then tosses across the lake.
The abrupt change from a genuine bear to an artificial one creates a comical effect in the scene that is almost like a funny pratfall. However, it’s delivered with complete seriousness, making it even more amusing. It’s meant to be intense, but instead, it becomes a hilarious and memorable example of the show’s most absurdly entertaining moments. Among Hulk scenes, it remains one of the most legendary and iconic ones.
9. Hulk Gets Annoyed With A Phone
Season 3, Episode 16, “Falling Angels”
As a passionate film buff, let me share an amusing moment from “The Incredible Hulk” that had me chuckling. In one scene, the Hulk accidentally comes across a ringing public telephone and, surprisingly, he picks it up, demonstrating some form of phone etiquette even for a monster. However, on the other line, a woman is heard screaming, assuming him to be her no-good husband. The Hulk stands there, puzzled, as the woman goes on with her tirade. Eventually, in frustration, he destroys the entire telephone.
In an incredibly strange turn of events, reminiscent of a humorous sitcom skit, it’s puzzling why the Hulk would answer the phone or why the woman is so convinced she’s arguing with her partner. The oddness is heightened by the fact that none of it seems logical, but the Hulk’s genuine perplexity and agitation in dealing with everyday life make this scene a memorable portrayal of the Hulk’s bewilderment and exasperation towards the mundane world.
8. Hulk Pilots An Airplane
Season 1, Episode 5 “747”
In a typical display of his unpredictable nature, The Incredible Hulk isn’t renowned for logical thinking, as demonstrated by the situation involving a 747. In the midst of an in-flight robbery midair, David found himself unexpectedly at the helm of a commercial jet. As he was being guided to land the plane, the pressure got to him and he transformed into the Hulk. What unfolded next was a bizarre scene straight out of 1970s TV: despite his usual chaos, the Hulk miraculously managed to bring the aircraft down safely.
In a playful move typical of Hulk, he flaunts his bulging biceps during maneuvers, reminiscent of the Hulk-out ritual. The sight of Lou Ferrigno’s green colossus struggling with the plane controls like a puzzled toddler is both amusing and preposterous. Instead of allowing Banner to gracefully land the aircraft or bypassing the transformation, the writers of “The Incredible Hulk” opted for an all-out lunacy – resulting in an unforgettable scene of utter foolishness.
7. Hulk Is Trapped Under A Giant Red Dome
Season 4, Episode 1 “Prometheus Part 1”
In an unusual design decision in “The Incredible Hulk”, the military encloses the Green Goliath within a colossal red bubble. This scene aims to evoke a sense of foreboding and confinement, but instead, it appears as if a spider has been trapped under a clear container – except this spider is Lou Ferrigno, painted green. The disturbing red tint of the dome clashes with the surrounding environment, contributing to an otherworldly atmosphere that accentuates the absurdity.
The entire idea appears absurdly unworkable and aesthetically preposterous. It’s as if it were conceived by a child playing with a toy set rather than being part of a government’s anti-Hulk plan. Watching the Hulk dash about under a giant sci-fi umbrella is undeniably one of the unintentionally comical images in the series.
6. Hulk Climbs Out Of A Giant Cake
Season 3, Episode 10 “Babalao”
In the story “Babalao”, David Banner – better known as The Incredible Hulk – is given a unique and surprising entrance. Instead of his usual dramatic appearances, he’s knocked down under a parade float only to emerge from within an enormous wedding cake, much like a dancer at a bachelor party would. Despite being played seriously, the absurdity of this moment makes it truly memorable.
The camera dwells on the entrance, apparently savoring the absurdity for as long as it can, before Hulk erupts into his customary bellowing rampage. There doesn’t seem to be any plot reason for the cake to be there, other than creating one of the most oddly amusing scenes in The Incredible Hulk. Scenes such as these are what transform a cult superhero drama into classic retro television.
5. Hulk Seduces A Green Mannequin
Season 3, Episode 21 “Equinox”
In an unexpectedly heartfelt scene from The Incredible Hulk, the Hulk experiences an unusual romantic moment – with a mannequin. As he rampages through a shopping mall, this giant green creature encounters a cluster of store dummies, one resembling him in color. With a tender love song playing softly in the background, the Hulk gazes deeply at the figure, going so far as to remove his torn shirt in what appears to be a flirtatious gesture.
In this instance, there’s an unusual softness to the situation, which becomes even more peculiar as Hulk appears baffled about the mannequin’s true nature. When he unintentionally topples it, the enchantment dissipates, and his regular anger resurfaces. This kind of scene leaves you pondering the thoughts of The Incredible Hulk‘s creators – and whether they may have perhaps pushed the idea of the Hulk’s solitude a bit too far.
4. David Banner Struggles To Make A Phone Work
Season 1, Episode 7 “Don’t Give A Trucker An Even Break”
In the initial installment of The Incredible Hulk, there’s a powerfully emotional scene where character David Banner transforms into the Hulk due to frustration over his inability to operate a public phone. Struggling to contact the authorities, David encounters difficulties not only with the technology but also an indifferent operator. This scenario lingers for much too long, depicting David’s attempts to manage the receiver, misunderstanding instructions, and growing increasingly agitated due to the irritatingly uncooperative operator.
The situation becomes so unbelievably ridiculous, like a caricature, that he finally explodes in anger due to the combination of annoyance and inadequate customer service. Eventually, his patience wears thin and he destroys the booth angrily. It’s almost as if comic-book level silliness has invaded reality. Instead of gamma radiation, it seems like David’s main adversary could be the bureaucracy within telecom companies and outdated phone systems.
3. David Hulks-Out Over Traffic
Season 1, Episode 4 “Terror In Times Square”
In an unwarranted transformation, David Banner, running late and aggravated by the persistent honking horns and stagnant traffic in Times Square, reaches his boiling point inside a taxi cab. Suddenly, he transforms into the Hulk, causing a spectacular yet unnecessary demonstration of raw power. The enraged Hulk smashes through the car door and charges into the bustling traffic.
As a movie reviewer, I found myself chuckling at the overly dramatic responses in the film. The road rage-fueled Hulk transformation was somewhat understandable, but it often seemed like an inconsequential device to ensure Hulk’s presence for the next scene. It serves as a comical reminder of just how flimsy the pretext could be for unleashing the Hulk whenever The Incredible Hulk required him for the storyline.
2. Hulk Tries Soda
Season 2, Episode 3 “Ricky”
In the episode “Ricky” from the series The Incredible Hulk, viewers experience an unusual moment as the massive Hulk participates in a normal everyday action – sampling soda. Following his friendship with Ricky, a man with mental disabilities, Hulk is exposed to the delight of carbonated drinks. The scene carries an unexpected warmth as Ricky shares the soda and the green colossus tentatively tries to squeeze the can before figuring out how to open it.
There’s an unusual charm to seeing this massive embodiment of anger taking a break to sip on a sweet drink. It’s a touching scene, but it feels oddly comical – almost as if we’re watching a superhero known for demolishing tanks and jumping over buildings being temporarily subdued by a soda can. It’s reminiscent of King Kong stumbling upon cupcakes: surprising yet adorable.
1. David Banner Hallucinates The Hulk
Season 3, Episode 1 “Metamorphosis”
In the opening episode of season three in “The Incredible Hulk”, David Banner unwittingly drinks a concoction laced with LSD, leading to a wild trip that resembles a ’70s vibe. What unfolds is a vivid, trippy experience as he imagines the Hulk growing more intense by the moment in hallucinations. The scene bursts with vibrant lights, whirling special effects, and resonating sound design, giving off an atmosphere reminiscent of “Yellow Submarine” rather than typical superhero television.
In this reimagined scenario, David encounters a twisted version of the Hulk during his transformation ordeal. At times, the Hulk extends menacingly, making David’s journey even more unsettling. This sequence is both mind-bending and strangely artistic – a bold shift from the usual narrative style. Although it seems that the writers aimed to portray David’s fear of surrendering control, the final product takes on a feel reminiscent of an anti-drug public service announcement instead of serving as a key plot development. Despite this, the scene remains an indelible moment in The Incredible Hulk series.
