‘I Wanted A Proper Goodbye’: FBI: Most Wanted’s Boss Explained The ‘Very Emotional’ Series Finale Decisions, And I Wish FBI: International Had Followed Suit
In spring 2025, CBS bid farewell to an era with the final episode of the popular drama series FBI: Most Wanted. As the initial spin-off from FBI, this series demonstrated that the vast Dick Wolf television empire could maintain a significant presence on network television, even alongside One Chicago and Law & Order airing on NBC. Regrettably, despite a substantial audience base for Most Wanted, it fell short of securing a Season 7, and its finale served as both a season and series conclusion.
It’s worth noting that each of the main characters in the series found a positive resolution, which is something that showrunner David Hudgins has explained. I believe fans of FBI: International would concur that the narrative arc of Most Wanted was far more fulfilling compared to it.
What Happened In FBI: Most Wanted’s Series Finale
In the series finale titled “The Circle Game”, now streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with a subscription, the Fugitive Task Force successfully completed their last mission ahead of schedule. The episode’s climax that left fans delighted was the heartwarming dinner at Remy’s restaurant, where old stories concluded and fresh chapters began, providing a satisfying sense of “resolution” to the series.
The beauty of seeing these characters in their final moments under the stars was simply indescribable, so I highly suggest watching or rewatching the episode to fully appreciate it. The finale, written by David Hudgins and his team, ended things perfectly without tainting the sweetness with any bitterness.
Indeed, I’ve chosen to step away from my career at the FBI, not due to any dismissal, injury, or ethical lapses. Rather, I’m embarking on a new chapter in life, dedicating my time to cherish Abby, my one true love, and together we are setting up our dream restaurant.
I’m thrilled to announce that I’m reuniting with Ethan, who’s recently moved back to New York City. His continuous journey towards recovery and the sweet dog he owns from the Wolf Entertainment franchise are just a few reasons why my future looks promising.
Ray is anticipating the birth of another child, as Cora’s pregnancy was announced earlier in the episode. Personally, I was delighted to see that it appears to be Ray and Cora’s second child. Throughout Ray’s story, family has been a significant theme, so it would have seemed out of place if the series finale had portrayed Caleb as a stepson who Ray didn’t acknowledge as his own. In fact, I would have loved to see more episodes focusing on the Cannon family dynamics, perhaps with the X-Files vet joining the cast.
What Showrunner David Hudgins Told TopMob
During my opportunity to query the showrunner, I couldn’t help but inquire about a fascinating point – why did the FBI: Most Wanted team opt for joyful conclusions, given that it’s among the gloomiest procedural shows on broadcast TV? David Hudgins clarified this choice as follows:
When I got the opportunity to speak with the showrunner, I had a curiosity to ask: why did the FBI: Most Wanted crew decide to wrap up the series with happy resolutions across the board despite being one of the grimmest procedural programs on television? David Hudgins responded:
Although it was sad to see the show conclude, I felt it necessary for a fitting farewell and a positive closure rather than a depressing one.
In contrast to what some might perceive as a message of despair in FBI: Most Wanted, the series provided a satisfying conclusion to its stories. The cast portrayed the final dinner scene so convincingly that it seemed like they were filming their last together. As it turns out, Hudgins confirmed this was indeed the case, describing the meal at The Muster Room as their actual farewell.
Yes, it was the last thing we shot. And very emotional.
Why did Barnes opt to remain on the Fugitive Task Force rather than accepting the secure desk job in Washington D.C., and even take over as Remy’s position? The showrunner offered a clear reason for this character development, who has long been perceived as acting as second-in-command on the Task Force since Jess was the leader:
1. Barnes preferred staying with the Fugitive Task Force over a desk job in Washington D.C.
2. Instead of accepting a safe and convenient desk job, Barnes decided to stay on the Fugitive Task Force.
3. Rather than choosing the desk job in Washington D.C., Barnes decided to take Remy’s place on the Fugitive Task Force.
4. Despite having the opportunity for a desk job in Washington D.C., Barnes opted to remain on the Fugitive Task Force and assume Remy’s role.
5. Instead of taking the desk job in Washington D.C., Barnes decided to stay on the Fugitive Task Force, even stepping into Remy’s position.
Deep within, she recognized that true joy resided in actively participating (‘boots on the ground’) and apprehending wrongdoers from the streets.
Was there any contemplation about how Season 7 might unfold if “Most Wanted” were to be revived during the 2025-2026 television season, similar to “FBI”? However, it turns out that such a scenario was never in the works, as the showrunner clarified.
The announcement about the cancellation came too early, preventing us from delving deeper into the tale. There were countless other narratives waiting to be shared.
With a Paramount+ subscription, you can now watch the final episodes of both “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International”, including their respective series finales. Additionally, you’ll have access to all seven seasons of the original “FBI”. Enjoy your streaming!
