One Chicago Season Finales: Shocking Twists and Troubled Characters Await!

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, during the final NBC One Chicago broadcast of the TV season, you can expect some significant surprises and turns of events. This is especially true for the spring 2025 schedule. For instance, Chicago Med will continue to develop the fallout from a pregnancy revelation, while Chicago Fire‘s Battalion Chief faces arrest prior to the finale. Moreover, the Intelligence Unit in Chicago P.D. was dismantled in the second-to-last episode of Season 12. These are merely a few of the many plot twists that will need to be resolved throughout the finales!

Fortunately, I had a chance to converse with the producers of Med Season 10, Fire Season 13, and P.D. Season 12 regarding the final episodes of their respective seasons. To be honest, my main impression is that I’m overjoyed to learn that all three shows have been granted another season. First off, let’s discuss the series that initiates One Chicago Wednesdays: Med.

Chicago Med – “… Don’t You Cry”

In the second-to-last episode of Season 10 (now streaming exclusively on Peacock), the doctors are set for a challenging situation due to the distraught parents of certain patients. This scenario is expected to elicit a remarkable acting display from Oliver Platt, as hinted by showrunner Allen MacDonald in an interview with TopMob.

It’s clear that the situation is extremely critical, as Walter (played by Sam Trammell), the father armed with a gun, feels profoundly deceived and desperate. He strictly followed the transplant regulations for years, climbing up the waiting list while his son Noah’s health worsened. Just when they were about to reach their moment, Griffin (Tim DeKay) seemingly snatches the lungs away at the last minute for his own daughter Alea (Brooklyn Shuck). Griffin’s wealth and influence enable him to jump ahead of the line, a situation that Walter finds unbearable. I believe that Walter reaches his breaking point when confronted with such unfairness. Nothing can be more disheartening to a parent than feeling incapable of shielding their child… and for Walter, this frustration boils over into uncontrollable anger.

In the Season 10 finale sneak peek, there seems to be a hint of raw anger, suggesting that Dr. Frost might step in to prevent a potentially violent scenario at Gaffney. On the other hand, Hannah faces a unique challenge in the upcoming episode, as she discovered last week that she’s pregnant. Initially, I thought Ripley could be the father due to their past relationship, but the showrunner was vague about how Hannah manages her pregnancy in the finale.

In the final episode, Hannah struggles with the solitary burden of her secret pregnancy, unsure about who to confide in.

Will Hannah interact with someone before the end of Season 10, or will we have to wait until Season 11 for answers about her pregnancy? Tune in to the Season 10 finale of Chicago Med on May 21 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC to find out.

And that brings us to…

Chicago Fire – “It Had To End This Way”

The initial season of Chicago Fire without Eamonn Walker’s character, Wallace Boden, as the permanent Chief of Firehouse 51 has been challenging for the first responders, including Dermot Mulroney’s Dom Pascal who took over from Boden. Showrunner Andrea Newman hinted that Severide will be deeply involved in Pascal’s storyline in the Season 13 finale. Furthermore, she previewed the departures of Jake Lockett and Daniel Kyri. However, it’s important to note that not all plotlines will be resolved by the end of “It Had To End This Way.” According to Newman, some threads may remain unraveled in the finale.

Even when situations appear resolved, new queries tend to emerge. Questions like, “What happens next?” or “How will this unfold?” or “Can they pull it off?” or “How will they continue amidst that situation?” are common. And sometimes, the answers given only lead to more questions. [laughs]

Things might seem clear-cut, but new uncertainties often arise. You’ll have questions like, “What’s next?”, “How will this play out?”, or “Can they handle it?” and sometimes the answers just spark more questions. [laughs]

In the upcoming finale, Herrmann will be seen gearing up to take the Chief exam, a step that could potentially fulfill Boden’s vision for him in the Season 12 finale. Additionally, Stella will find herself entangled in Natalie’s relationship with her sibling. Now, the question arises: have the creators of Chicago Fire already devised answers to all the unresolved questions at the end of Season 13? The showrunner clarified:

Whenever we perform the final scenes, we always have a clear idea of what additional scenes (the B-sides) will look like. However, these scenes can sometimes develop unexpected lives of their own and veer off in directions we don’t anticipate. Sometimes, the actors connect so wonderfully with certain scenes that it feels like, ‘Wow, we need to explore this further.’ We too are often taken aback. We watch the daily footage or are on set and come across something surprising that wasn’t initially planned, or discover the opposite. For instance, ‘Oh, that didn’t turn out as expected. We won’t be doing it anymore.’ This is what makes working in network TV exciting. You can witness the results just ten minutes after writing it, and see what works and what doesn’t. And you get to adjust and adapt as you go along.

It’s yet unknown who will occupy the Chief’s office at 51 by the end of the episode, and it’s also uncertain if Natalie’s relationship with Stellaride will solidify more permanently. The Season 13 finale is set to broadcast on May 21 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

And what would a One Chicago finale night be without concluding on some crime action?

Chicago P.D. – “Vows”

As Deputy Chief Reid followed through on his menacing promises to arrest Torres, take away Burgess’ badge, and dismantle Voight’s unit, the Intelligence team faced an abrupt dissolution at the close of the penultimate episode in Season 12. In the finale, showrunner Gwen Sigan shed light on Voight’s precarious situation while also hinting at which characters are currently in Reid’s crosshairs, openly aiming to undermine our team.

It seems like everyone is facing some serious repercussions, isn’t it? [laughs] Torres appears to be in the most legal trouble, as he might even end up in prison. However, considering the amount of evidence and types of charges they could potentially face, any one of them could wind up behind bars. Emotionally, Voight seems to be the one who’s most troubled, given his strong connection to his team. This is a unit he’s never come so close to losing, and we all know how much it means to him. So, what lengths will he go to save his unit? That’s a question that hangs in the air as we approach the finale.

Despite the entire team finding themselves in deep distress, fans can find solace knowing that NBC officially announced Burgess and Ruzek will indeed get married before the series finale, a surprising turn of events considering the unpredictable nature of a Chicago P.D. finale. Moreover, their happiness is evident, an unusual sight for the show’s main characters in such a climactic episode.

It appears that Burgess and Ruzek are opting for a more conventional wedding as opposed to Upton and Halstead’s courthouse elopement. This might lead to a more joyous union for them compared to what Upson experienced. As per Gwen Sigan, fans can rest assured that there won’t be any disruptions during their wedding ceremonies. She stated:

You can anticipate that their wedding will be filled with joy, but it’s also going to reflect typical Chicago P.D. style – there will be costs and consequences, some of which unfold during the wedding itself. It’s a blend of happiness and darkness, as is often the case in Chicago P.D., so don’t expect a fairy tale. [laughs]

It seems Chicago P.D. enthusiasts can find common ground in their affection for Burzek, and I’m hoping it’s clear they deserve some good fortune! Unravel the events that lead to both triumphs and setbacks by tuning into the Season 12 finale on May 21 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.

After taking everything into account, the showrunners of One Chicago have hinted at some quite dramatic conclusions for this season, which means fans might want to catch up on these episodes once they’re streamable on Peacock the next day. Additionally, the trio is set to resume their regular Wednesday slot on NBC in the fall.
