Simon Pegg Reveals Why Shaun of the Dead 2 Is Off the Table Forever!

As a film enthusiast, I’d say it was the quintessential British blockbuster – the one that outshone all others in its category. In this movie, Simon Pegg plays Shaun, a laid-back fellow who, let’s face it, wasn’t exactly ready for the zombie invasion. His strategy? Simply waiting for things to calm down. Unfortunately, that plan went south faster than a popsicle on a hot day.

As a cinephile, I can proudly say that I’ve found myself in some of the biggest blockbuster franchises such as Mission: Impossible, Star Wars, and Star Trek. The adrenaline from that success still surges through me today. However, not even for a moment have I entertained the idea of creating a sequel, prequel, reboot, or spinoff to the movie that catapulted my career. That film, the cherished rom-zom-com, is close to my heart and I guard it fiercely.

Recently, Pegg participated in a Q&A session on Reddit, and fans were eager to learn if Pegg had any ideas about extending the Shaun of the Dead series. However, Pegg provided an unequivocal response – he intends for Shaun of the Dead to remain a standalone movie. In today’s Hollywood, where franchises are being created from individual films even when it doesn’t make sense, Shaun of the Dead will continue as a unique piece.

He expressed his viewpoint by saying, “I believe it’s best if we leave it as is. I don’t see any reason for a restart.” He further explained, “Some stories come with a clear beginning, middle, and end. However, sequels can sometimes be problematic because they require unraveling the resolution of the initial story to start another one. This is particularly true for films like Mission: Impossible, superhero movies, or Star Trek, as their ongoing nature allows for continuation. Yet, with movies like Shaun of the Dead, Shaun’s character develops from a specific starting point to an ending. And we’re content with how that story concludes.

He continued, “Occasionally, when you make a sequel to a film like that, it can dilute the impact of the original. When rewatching the original, one might anticipate future events, causing the resolution to lose its significance. Therefore, my answer to that question is no.

It’s likely that fans will find satisfaction with his response. According to Pegg, Shaun of the Dead is already flawless.

Pegg Will Happily Work With Edgar Wright Again

The film “Shaun of the Dead” brought forth the talented trio consisting of Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost. While Frost is currently busy portraying Hagrid in the Harry Potter series, this leaves room for Pegg to collaborate with Wright again. As Pegg stated during an AMA, “What me and Edgar need to do is find about three months where we can simply be together in an office and write.” Once that happens, a new film project might be on the horizon. After Frost finishes his role in Harry Potter, which could last for eight years or so, fans may look forward to another Pegg-Edgar-Wright collaboration, but it will likely not be related to “Shaun of the Dead.

Shaun of the Dead is streaming on MGM+.
